I usually try to watch his defense pretty close when I see his games. He definitely has some issues and gets exploited at times. The overall end result tends to be a bit better than youd expect given how bad he will occasionally look on specific plays. He seems like a guy that could benefit from an NBA strength/conditioning program and I think his IQ, size, and reaction time, will help offset some of quickness/strength limitations. Not sure exactly where I'd project him to pan out as a defender at this point, but I don't see him as necessarily hopeless.

Hopefully that puts an end to the laughable narrative that he’s a lottery talent

Anthony Black isn't a traditional point guard. Keyonte George has question marks. Cason Wallace may have limitations as a lead guard.

So as purely a thought exercise, is Gradey Dick a player that teams should consider as an on-ball initiator, effectively playing a role similar to Josh Giddey in OKC? Going back through some of his HS tape, it does look like he's got some ball skills.

In this draft, I think he could go late lottery. Outside the top 8 or 9 guys, I'm not sure there's a lot of consensus.

No. Absolutely not.

Class is short on on-ball guys though.

If the Jazz are drafting in the 9 - 11 range, I think Dick makes the shortlist. Black, Wallace, George, Dick and Hendricks would all be in play, imo. Then there's the fact that he looks like Danny Ainge's nephew.

when is there ever a consensus after the top 3 or 4 guys let alone top 8 or 9?

I would expect Victor, Scoot, Miller, both Thompsons, Walker, Whitmore and probably Hendricks to be 8 of the top 9 or 10 picks. After that though, it's anyone's guess.

No, no, no.

Idk what HS tape you watched, but his ability to create off the dribble is very limited. Offensively his role should be:

-Spot up shooter
-Movement shooter
-Good cutter
-Good at getting out in transition and finishing on the break
-Connective passer / good ball mover
-Ok lob threat
-Ok at attacking closeouts

That's pretty much it.

The good news is, that's a lot of stuff he can do. Showed some improvements late in the season defensively, showed some decent flashes in terms of athleticism late in the season, too.

He's a lottery pick, no question. Right now, I've got him ranked at 12. He could develop move on ball creation skills, but as of now, that's definitely not a strength of his game.

People aren't talking about it yet, but Josh Giddey sucks.
I was right about 3 point shooting. I expect to be right about Tacko Fall. Some coach will figure out how to use Tacko Fall. This movement towards undersized centers will sweep ng back. Back to the basket scorers will return to the NBA.

It wasn't that random! Someone brought up Giddey as a comp.

Watching him play I personally don't like his game but he's talented.

Yes, he's definitely got some talents. But shooting is not one of them, which is the problem.

Why would he need to have or show a "developed midrange game"? Go draft Brice Sensabaugh for that.
