Keyontae Johnson

What do people think?

Clearly, when you watch him play and look at the stats he put up this season, he's an NBA player.

The NBA these days is all about wings.

This guy is a wing with a strong/sturdy build, he can shoot, good passer, good defender, good athleticism, can get to the rim off the dribble..

I'm curious where people rank him and what info do we know about his health situation?

https://www.npr.org/2020/12/23/949751706/university-of-florida-forward-keyontae-johnson-diagnosed-with-heart-inflammation

The article says he was diagnosed with acute myocarditis - an inflammation of the heart muscle.

Myocarditis - it's most commonly got by viral infections, and it has been linked to COVID-19. There's fear about what that could do to athletes. And we've already seen some that have been sidelined because of myocarditis. Just this month, the starting safety at Miami, Al Blades, a woman's basketball player at Vanderbilt, both of them announced that they had been diagnosed with myocarditis and were going to be out for the season after having COVID.

2 years ago we saw what happened with Jared Butler. He was projected to go in the 10-20 range, then word got out about a heart condition he had and he fell to the 40th pick. Since then he's been waived by the Jazz and hasn't done squat in the NBA.

I don't think Butler slipping was from the heart issues, we already knew about it because he had to decommit from Alabama, it was his size and lack of athletecism. He still has a chance to stick as an end of bench guy.

I still like Johnson, I'd take him early second pretty easily. Strong, good mobility, has that side step and stepback jumper down well. His outcome, IMO, swings on lateral mobility. I think he's better if he can defend 3s but might be an undersized 4.

I don’t know…he’s an okay shooter. His body looks like the part but I agree he’s not super athletic or twitchy. He looks very stiff. I would say his comp is half as athletic Jeff green

Yah, I'm thinking more like Kenrich Williams without the playmaking, but a better rebounder and a bit more strength. So, a possibly decent 3 and D guy but nothing special on the court.

Looks like a potentially dominant (role-playing) NBA wing.. reminds me of Iggy.. but those health issues..

I don't think he's a good 3 point shooter. His shot is very flat. You're going to have to play him at the 4. He can for sure guard dudes that are 6'8+++

I think he will be in that 33 to 35 percent range from three. That's good enough as long as the defense is solid, too. Guys like that are so important for NBA benches.

He's going to be another Dez bane, Jordan Poole type of pick imo if he stays healthy, where everyone wonders how he didnt go much earlier

I think he is closer to a Reggie Bullock with more height. I dont see him at all like Poole and Dez has more wiggle to his game + handle.

Think he turns out to be a pure 3/D - as in open 3's and high energy on D but no handle really or dynamism to his offense (IE Bullock)

I just meant in terms of late picks that should've went earlier. Game-wise, he's alot like Keldon Johnson

Keyontae's play making is pretty good IMO. And Kenrich is is decent play making but not great - I would say they're fairly even in that department.

Keyontae seems to be more athletic but overall, it could be a fairly close comp.

I can see the initial Warriors Iggy for sure. KJ doesn't have the same motor/physical abilities, instincts as prime Iggy who is almost 40, good for him.

I value KJ in the 2nd, nobody is touching him in the 1st... I'm hoping he lands in the late 40s pick the Hawks have. Hoping he shows well at the combine. I can see a good off the bench Keldon Johnson realistically which has plus value.

Don't think you've watched Kenrich enough if you think his playmaking is "decent". It's literally his entire value proposition. Always has been. He's a bad athlete with a great brain.

I think the bold part is hyperbole. You're implying he's one of the best play making wings in the league and is not good at anything else.

He's also a good defender who can switch onto multiple positions, good 3 pt shooter who shows flashes of being able to drive it to the rim. Plus he has a strong build, has good toughness - which paired with his defensive prowess allows him to play bigger than his listed height.

High IQ, unselfish, can fit within the team concept on both ends of the floor.

All of that combined is his value proposition. It's not just the play making.

I wouldn't draft this guy. He's old, lacks IQ and looked like crap in most of the tournament. And there's always the heart issue from a few years ago.

Kenrich has incredibly good feel. That's how he overcomes his considerable physical limitations. Just seems weird to compare him to Keyontae Johnson. Keyontae is more like a Lou Dort type.

Nah. Dort is 2" shorter than Keyonte.

Dort gets most of his value as a player from being a good, tough, physical defender. Whereas Keyontae is a decent defender who gets most of his value from being a wing who can shoot well from 3 + catch lobs + attack closeouts + create a little bit in the mid range, while being a decent play maker and defender.

Keyontae is more like Ochai Agbaji, with Keyontae being older but tougher and able to do more in terms of play making, creating off the bounce..
