If It’s Not Wembanyama, Scoot or Miller, Who Winds Up the Best Player of ‘23?

And let’s get this out of the way right from the jump, I’m not necessarily saying all, or any of those 3 guys bust.

I’m more talking if this is like ‘09. Blake Griffin was the consensus #1 and wound up a fantastic player for years even though injuries ultimately derailed, or at least impacted his career trajectory.

James Harden is a lock Hall of Famer, who is still a top 30 guy without batting an eye.

Evans and Rubio had a solid runs.

There are many other All Star level guys like Jrue, DeRozan and Ty Lawson before he went full drunk.

But Curry went 7th and is an all time great.

So just assuming none of the current consensus top 3 of this draft wind up the top player from it, say 5 years + in the future, then who is?

And does that guy wind up a generational Curry-like talent?

Anthony Black, or a low floor high ceiling guy like GG Jackson, or maybe one of the twins

Thompson twins seem like the obvious choice.
Coulibaly has some serious upside as well.

Not sure between Cam, AB, and Keyonte. Probably whichever one becomes a good to great 3 pt shooter.

Anthony Black, Keyonte George, Kobe Bufkin, GG Jackson

All the point/combo guards + baby Jackson

Whitmore, Walker, Hendricks just seem borning. 20/10 is nice, but still just a 20/10 role player.

Dick seem to have a low ceiling. Wallace just seem like the most boring small PG you can draft. Hawkins is a role shooter. Nick Jr has a ceiling but is a mess right now. Sansabaugh is a worse Hawkins. Thompson's probably are bench players in an average case presumably.

I do feel like Nick Smith Jr doesn’t get heralded much because of an injury plagued, subpar and short season, but there was a reason he was a top 5 prospect.

I also will go with Bufkin. He could have a Donovan Mitchell-esqe career arc on the right team.

If we are doing 5 years in the future, it'd probably be more likely to be an Amen or Anthony Black. Leonard Miller is tempting as well, but i will stick my neck out and go Bobi Klintman. I'm pretty high on his long term potential.

The Thompson Twins, Cam Whitmore, GG Jackson, Leonard Miller, Keyonte George come immediately to mind.

There's a world where Keyonte or Jett could be that guy, just because the skill level is so high. I don't really see it with anyone else.

I don't know how feasible it is for Wemby to fail but the way I see it, I actually think the idea of other prospects surpassing Scoot and Miller is more likely than one would realize. Here's a possibility:

Thompson twins who add jumpshots to their game. Even at 30% 3pt, that would probably make them dominant guards on offense akin to D Wade. Don't think they have that gravitas factor to become Wade on offense (they need a pretty mid-range jumper for that) but they may Grant Hill type stats. Then, on defense, they become good POA defenders.

Jarace Walker, if his offense develops, can become a two way wing in the Kawhi, Butler, PG13, Lebron mould. As much as people want to portray him as a Julius Randle or Paul Millsap, his game isn't really built that way. He cites Lebron and Tatum as players that influence him, for example. Thus, he plays like them. With a 38" vertical and ball handling and passing skills. He could become that player. At the least, he becomes DPOY if Wemby fails to. His combination of speed, strength, and length makes him capable of guarding all five positions.

Zach Edey. Highest PER in college history iirc...twice in a row. Similar player within his PER zone? Zion. The big gap occurring after Edey and Zion is....Keegan Murray and then, Brandon Clarke, who is a solid player. At the least, Edey is a Boban/Enes Kanter hybrid. At best, he is a Jokic type player....slow, lumbering, non-defensive but hyper efficient with high IQ.

It will be Wemby but I really like Cam Whitmore. Hendricks should be really good too but he has to land in the right situation.

Sensabaugh

He’s likely going to average 25ppg at some point. Let me know who averaged 25ppg in the league that can create on offense that isn’t consider an allstar. If there is, its really few.

Questionable defense? They said the same thing about Doncic and Jokic right? Guess what, those two are the face of the league right now.

Even if Sensa plays great defense, i’d let him stand in the corner defending the spot up shooter so he has enough energy to destroy the defense of the opponent on the other end
