Ian Jackson

This is my first time getting a live look at him and there’s a lot to like.

He’s currently putting up basically a boxscore donut and UNC is in complete control of this game, and yet you could almost say he’s looked like the best player on the floor.

His motor is great, he’s committed on D, he’s fast, his decision making is decisive and natural, he moves great off the ball, endlessly no less; his first step and handle is there, he instantly makes the hockey pass and keeps the ball moving, his body language is great; and although skinny, he looks every part of at least 6’5 with length, and looks NBA athletic to boot, even though he’s years of conditioning away from being proper strong.

A lot to like here, think he’s a top 10 lock by June.

Incredibly skilled and advanced in some areas of the game, a ways to go in others.

I love:
His first step
His boundless energy in all phases
His “bag” of dribbling moves
His finishing through contact
His jump shot
His off-ball play; tireless cuts, catch-and-shoot threes
His confidence and decisiveness

I like:
His frame (some concerns, needs weight, but he’s got a good wingspan)
His willingness to play up a position
His vertical explosiveness
His defensive flashes in passing lanes

I don’t like:
His passing - it isn’t awful, but he doesn’t do well with the shoot/pass plays. He needs to slow it down
His defensive rotations
His weight
His feel for the game as a playmaker

Glad Jackson is getting some more love with his recent performances. Still, tough for me to be too high on him as long as he's nothing but a scorer on offense and a clearly subpar defensive player. This kind of player is usually better drafted in the teens or lower IMO (of course some such players end up being drafted too low in hindsight but others end up being drafted too high).

Just posted an article on why I now have Jackson ranked as a top 5 prospect in this draft class.

Read on Twitter

One thing I touch on in the article is how I think Jackson is a better passer and defender than the numbers suggest.. (based on looking more closely at the film and looking at other games in addition to UNC such as OTE, Mcdonalds all american game, etc.)

I'm not convinced Tre Johnson is better than Ian Jackson.

My NBA comp for him is Donovan Mitchell

Me neither. I think Jackson is a better prospect - as of now..

Yup, I see some Mitchell in him. Also some shades of Beal, Maxey - smaller Jaylen Brown..

i've been a big tre johnson guy all season, but i don't disagree. i absolutely love ian jackson's game. reminds me of maxey.

he is older for a frosh - will be 20 in february - i don't care about that, just throwing it out there. almost two years older than flagg, 1.5 years older than Ace Bailey, a year older than Tre Johnson.

20 and 7 last night. nothing special, but so consistently productive which is a special ability for a one and done.

Nothing special? There's no other player in this draft class with his combination of scoring volume, scoring efficiency, 3 point shooting, handles, shot creation and rim pressure.

holy hell. this board sometimes. the 20 and 7 game is nothing special. then i turn around and call him a special for his consistency in being productive and this is your response. you may need therapy.

ian jackson might be my favorite player in college basketball love him him as a prospect. i never miss a unc game because of him and i have you preaching to me about how good he is because eager to tell somebody they are wrong you can't read the post any other way.

That's too high for me but at least his BPM is good. This class has an absurd amount of productive Freshmen. I'm not super into Ian Jackson but he'd probably be a top 5 pick in the last 3 drafts.

Great scorer but really doesn't do anything else. What separates him from a Cam Thomas? Top 5 is absolutely wild to me, but what do I know.

Interested to hear the rest of your top 10 then because even as a UNC fan I can’t quite get there.

Why is this player being so underrated? I'm seeing him in the Pistons' second-round pick range and I find it incredible that he's gotten that far.

He seems like a poor man's Buddy Hield. I don't know about second round though. Probably a late first for me.

Dude's playing time and production has fallen off a cliff. Why? Hubert Davis effect? I wouldn't go to North Carolina if I was trying to get to the NBA.
