Thoughts on Johni Broome?
I only start watching college ball as we approach the draft, so I have caught one game of his, but I was really impressed. I see Tankathon lists him as mocked at #31. He looked better than a 31st pick to me, and his stats beyond the game I saw are also impressive. I assume he is that low because he is going to be 23 by draft time, but sometimes if you can ball, you can ball. I know I’d be happy to see my Blazers land a late first/early 2nd to get him as both Rob Williams and Ayton are expiring, though I don’t expect it. What are others thoughts on him?

My problem with Broome is there isn't anywhere I can point and realistically see a 3P shot developing, which he desperately needs as the rest of his game isn't impactful enough to be a clear NBA-level player.

How is on defense? His game is below the rim. He doesn’t play explosive at all and gets nothing in transition.

I think this mindset is why Broome is mocked so low... I'm not sure I agree though.
People are going to hate this comparison, but I see an Al Horford type with Broome.

He's not a hyper-athletic guy, but he is just a highly intelligent and skilled player. I don't think he will ever 'dominate' a game, but will make very timely key plays to help a team win.
I get the concerns, but I think he'll be a steal after ~#20.

Horford has incredibly high BBIQ which allowed him to reach his 99% outcome (literally, didn't even enter the league as a shooter and became a playmaking hub offensively).
A lot needs to go right for Broome to be a good player. Maybe he gets there, but I definitely wouldn't bet on it.
The one advantage he has is being a late 1st he could be going to a good team which can utilize his skill-set.

Re: Thoughts on Johni Broome?
I've been following him since his Freshman year. The longer he stayed in school the less I saw him as a serious NBA prospect. The problem is that the thing(s) that make him valuable in NCAA simply do not translate to the next level.
I mean the scary thing is that his FT% is so bad that you can't in full faith even project any shooting whatsoever. So you have this guy who lives in the post and he simply can't be that guy in the NBA. He has to get by on being a defender, which I am very skeptical on, although to be fair, he does block shots and rebounds. He's also smart and a good passer. I think you can take a flier on him in the mid-second but he could easily go UDFA. Feels like a Xavier Tillman type outcome. Will be interested to see his measurements.

Tillman is about right. I was saying Brandon Clarke but after watching him more he isnt nearly as athletic.

This just a Tyler Hansborough, Drew Timme situation. Maxed out college player with zero NBA prospect. You can dominate college all you want, but this style and mix of skill has zero potential in the NBA.
Timme is likely a fringe NBA player.

Feels very Trayce Jackson Davis to me... you know he is probably better than a lot of the guys ahead of him, but at the same time not a ton of upside as a smaller NBA center with a lack of outside shooting, along with the advanced age.

Broome is a much better defender and projects as a better defensive piece than Timme.

Statistically he looks very similar.
Tjd's athleticism made for an easy translation into a scaled down finisher role that I think Johni will struggle to fill but could play a role similar to current Kevon Looney.

Actually sort of reminds me of Jabari Walker JR.
Hard worker who is a nice guy to have as a 3rd stringer who can fill at PF or C but not really someone you spend a decent pick on. Both are tweeners, both lack a consistent 3, great rebounders, hustle guys - just about 10-15 years too late for the league.

Re: Thoughts on Johni Broome?
With the history of college players being listed taller than they should, I wanna know if he really is 6'10 in shoes as they say. It could influence his position as a backup C seeing as he doesn't look athletic enough to be a 4man in this modern NBA

He measured at 6-9 w/o shoes at the '23 GLeague Elite Camp. Source
9ft standing reach, 7ft wingspan. From a physical POV he's fine for what he is (i.e. undersized C). Looney is a good comp I saw someone through out, although I do like TDJ as well.

Based on eye test, Looney is a pogo stick compared to Broome.
I would say he is more like Horford.

If he doesn't lose 20lbs or lean out, he won't sniff an NBA floor. He's overweight and he's not the defender he used to be.

Re: Thoughts on Johni Broome?
He looks and plays so much like Carlos Boozer on offense which would be a great thing if it was the early 00s but unlike Boozer, he can actually defend a little. He's not going to be able to play center and he has just adequate size and athleticism for a power forward. If he wants to play he really needs to learn to shoot or he'll be used sparingly as a small ball 5
