Dailyn Swain's college career has ended as Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn boxes him out and gets the tip in over Swain with less than a second remaining in the Sweet Sixteen of the 2026 NCAA tournament. This play came immediately after Swain drove in hard and made a tough layup and-one to tie the game with 12 seconds in the game.

11 seed Texas that had to crawl out of the first four in Dayton, OH falls to 2 seed Purdue, who rolls onto the Elite Eight.

Texas ends the season with a 22-14 record.

Swain, the junior guard / forward who led the Texas basketball team this season, is now ranked #17 among draft prospects by ESPN Analytics. He has been rising throughout the season.

If he can be a 35% three point shooter he is a useful wing in the NBA.

The dynamic 6' 8", 225 pound Guard / Forward Dailyn Swain is unique due to his powerful self-creation and driving ability. When intersected with his immense size and strength, it's easy to see why his case as a prospect has been rising.

Due to this, he can be compared to a taller, stronger version of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (with slightly worse cognition and an unproven outside shot, along with a few other differences; however, the similarities are undeniable).

Although he is a junior, he is exceptionally young for his class, born in July 15, 2005. On draft night, he will be 20 years and 11 months old.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was 19 years and 11 months old when he was drafted.

I haven't gone in depth on him yet but the more common comp people been dishing out is Naji Marshall - is that not a bit more realistic?

His future is as a 3-and-D player. He's not aggressive enough on offense to be anything more than that. He's a connective player with good instincts though. You don't really want him handling the ball against NBA wing defenders though. Handle too loose for that. And I said back in November in the 2026 draft thread, he would work his way into the first round. I still think he's somewhere from 18-30.

Coming from a guy who claims Dylan Harper is a bust, this feels like a curse for Swain's future.

I think many sleep on Swain's handle as the differentiator for him as a 6'7-6'8 wing. Legitimate tight guard handle that allows him to get to the spots he wants to on the floor and leverage his length and athleticism to finish. It gives him more upside to leverage and grow relative to most of the wing busts he gets compared to.

Still plenty of question marks, but the path to upside resides with his handle IMO.

Swain's season this past year was monstrous from the perspective of self-created rim looks. He averaged 3.8 unassisted FGM at rim per 40 this season.

Naji is a good comp. I think he has a pretty high floor, like a current Kyle Anderson is likely but he could be a lot more if he improves his defense or shooting. I see a role-player who's smart on both ends, with good length/size, and an above average athlete.

Swain's statistical profile and playstyle from this past season has a ton of similarities to Ajay Mitchell as a prospect--particularly his soph and junior seasons. They score in the same ways at the same rates. I can see a parallel projection of Swain as a SG/SF version of Ajay in the NBA plus 3-5" in length.
