Greivis Vasquez

How come nbadraft.net doesn't mention him at all in both mocks, and DX puts him only in the 2nd round in 09?

I admit, havn't seen him play at all this season, but his stats look great plus he was great against the dream-team the past summer, and he's only a sophmore.

so what's the deal??

He's a sophomore with a point guard's mentality, a shooting guard's body but the lateral speed of a D-Leaguer. Give him time. He may be slept on like DJ Strawberry was. Damn, I wish I knew Strawberry was gonna be this good.

Terps fan here. And I'm not sure. Greivis is putting up numbers, has a Great attitude, very passionate about the game, and real good size and strength at the 1. He has an excellent trademark move of curling in the lane and using his size to hit running layups. He takes a lot of pride in being the PG, but he's not a pure PG. Even though he's not fast, he does push the ball up well - you have to to play PG for MD. But he's not a great ballhandler or decision-maker. He takes too many off-balanced shots, tries to do a little too much by himself. I hate to say it, but I don't consider him a 1st round pick. He'd have to dramatically improve his 3 point shooting to be a prime prospect, imo - something an ex-Terp PG by the name o Steve Blake did.

I disagree. I think he is clearly a first round prospect, just as I thought Strawberry was.

His biggest problem is that he plays with too much emotion. he tends to get out of control, and force shots and passes because of it.

But he has great vision, especially in the open court, makes good decisions when he is calm, is a good finisher around the basket. His jumper does need work, but he is the type to improve it.

He gives you his all out effort every game, which sometimes is too much, but he will never be criticized for lack of hustle.

His passing and vision at 6'5 is what makes him a first rounder IMO.

Okay, that's 2 posts with big-time praise for Strawberry. I think he belongs in the NBA, but what exactly has he done in the Association to impress you guys so much? His stats look awful - in limited PT - and his on/off numbers are horrible - particularly on his strength - defense.

The difference between Strawberry and Vasquez is that Strawberry is an outstanding athlete.

Vasquez isn't a bad athlete, and you can't help but love how he plays the game. I do think he'll find a spot in the league. He might be able to use his length to make up for his relative lack of speed defensively. There tends to be a spot in the league for big PGs, so he has that in his favor.

I think he will be a very good player. I haven't seem much of him yet, but I was going off what the poster above me said. He will be better over time.

Plus I don't see what he has to do with Vasquez.

I don't anyone thinks Vasquez is ready right now, or might ever be for that matter, but his numbers outside of shooting an dTO anre pretty good. You can't help but feel if he tightrens those areas up, which isn't inconcievable his other advantages make him an NBA player.

Only have watched him play Duke and UNC, but he really impressed me during the UNC game. He ran the offense well and made plays, put his team in a position to win, and got his teammates easy baskets. Basically everything I'd want out of a pg and the fact he's 6'5" helps.

Quicker PG's can tear Vasquez to shreds. So far, the main PG that has NBA potential is Eric Maynor from Virginia Commonwealth. It wasn't even close on the court who was the better player. And Maynor will probably be a second rounder in 2009.

Otoh, Grevis has pwned Lawson every time he's faced him - including HS.
