Memphis has no soul without Pau. You know Rose would get the fans to at least take interest in the team.

With Conley, Crittendon and Lowry to choose from, do you move down 2 to 3 spots and swap to get one of the above (unless Memphis gets #1 or #2)?

I.E. New York gets #2, then trades the rights to Rose for the rights to (probably Brook Lopez) and Conley.

Or if you get Rose, you keep him?

I'll try not to hate too much on Rose again, but yes I'd trade Rose for Conley + Lopez. I do like Conley; he's not as big or athletic as Rose, but he's had a pretty promising rookie year (9/4). I'm guessing though the majority of posts coming up is going to say no way in hell they'll trade a future hall of famer in Rose though.

IMO, NY should do that. It fills their biggest needs in a good, young and promising PG plus with a solid and promising center.

If Miami ends up with the 2nd pick, and picks Rose, and Memphis ends up with the 3rd or 4th pick, and picks Lopez, I see a trade as a definite possibility.

Miami has huge holes at PG and C, so Conley + Lopez could fill some serious needs. Plus they don't seem super impressed with Rose or Beasley, as they've already talked about possibly trading the #1 overall pick if they get it. Miami would have a nice core for the future of:

PG - Conley/Quinn
SG - Wade/Cook
SF - Marion/Wright
PF - Haslem
C - Lopez

I think Miami would do it, but would Memphis? Maybe they'd rather just keep Conley and Lopez? They already have so many young guards (Conley, Lowry, Critt, JCN), and such a lack of bigs - maybe if they can't get Beasley, Lopez is next on their list anyways? (not that they'd pass on Rose for anyone but Beasley, but if they end up with the #3 or #4 pick, maybe they wouldn't be too choked)

The answer, unless getting back an incredibly talented player, is no. Rose has potential superstar written all over him. I am not saying he is Deron Williams, but I go by the rule if Utah easily rejects that deal for Deron Williams, then you won't get Rose. Look, Conley has played in the league AND shown he will never be a superstar, why you do that trade is beyond me.

I mean, lets say Miami has rose: They get a C (like Diop in FA) then there team is:
Rose/Wade/Marion/Haslem/Diop

You can't possibly have a trade that is a better upgrade at the 5 than Rose is over any PG you bring.

It is far, far from a sure thing the Rose will be as good as Deron. Also, I think Conley can still be a very nice PG.
It would maybe take more than Conley + Lopez to get Rose, but the value isn't WAY off.



Also, just for fun, using your Deron example:

Deron in 05/06 (rookie NBA season, after 2 years of college):
28.8mpg, 10.8ppg, 0.421/0.416/0.704, 4.5apg, 2.4rpg, 0.8spg, 1.81 TO, 2.90 PF

Conley in 07/08 (rookie NBA season, after 1 year of college):
25.9mpg, 9.3ppg, 0.429/0.329/0.735, 4.1apg, 2.5rpg, 0.8spg, 1.69 TO, 1.50 PF


They had virtually identical rookie seasons, and Conley is a younger, less experienced rook than Deron was, so I wouldn't write off Conley just yet. Obviously Deron has made huge progress every year, but Conley's solid but unspectacular rookie season doesn't mean he'll never be a star PG.

edit: I predict that Rose and Conley will put up very similar numbers next year, in the range of 14 ppg, 6 apg, 3.5 rpg, although I definitely agree that Rose will eventually be a significantly better player.

williams actually played 3 years in college, but I wouldn't read too much into that. Conley's rookie season wasn't that great whether it compares well to Williams or not. He could very well end up turning the corner like Williams did but i'd imagine there are plenty of other guys who put up similar statlines as rookies and never turned into much.

My biggest problem with this trade is that I'm just not sure if I'm completely sold on any of the potential #3 guys. I'd probably be more willing to do it if I needed a SG so I could use the #3 on Mayo or Bayless, because I like them more than Lopez. To me Lopez just looks exactly like 20 other players who all ended up being really good but not quite worth their draft spot (see: Bogut).

Maybe seattle would make the trade and end up with a potential future lineup of:

Conley
Mayo
Durant
Green
Petro

that could be a pretty damn good run and gun team I think.

Agreed that Conley's season was not amazing, but it was still probably the best rookie season for a PG since the 05/06 PG crop. I'm not saying Conley is going to be as good as Deron (HIGHLY unlikely), I'm just pointing out that people shouldn't write him off just yet. I think he's still going to be at least a top 10 PG in the league in his prime.

I'm also not hugely impressed with Lopez, and I'd probably rate Mayo above him, but I could definitely see him being a Chris Kaman type player. If Mike Conley can pan out as a more pass-first version of Tony Parker, and Lopez can pan out as a Chris Kaman like center, would that be worth a Deron Williams quality PG (not saying that Deron and Rose have similar games, just saying that Rose's upside is a roughly Deron quality PG)? If you are a team like Miami, with serious holes at both PG and C, who want to rebuild quickly, maybe it is worth trading quality for quantity, even though that's normally a bad idea.

If the Knicks manage to land the 2nd overall and draft Rose but trade it instead, it'll prove one thing, it's not Isiah Thomas, it's the GM's office space at Madison Square Garden that is haunted by something very, very stupid.

Rose has superstar written all over him - as well as "The Great Poohdini".

No way do you trade him if you have a chance to draft him.

No team will trade rose for that package imho.

I think its like last year. Top two...then maybe another group of 3-4 players..then everyone else.

But the difference between the top two..and that next group, is fairly large.

I know the sonics wouldn't do that.
