Where would Marc Gasol fall in this year's draft?

Post#1 » by Apollo64 » Mon May 12, 2008 8:25 pm

Inspired by a thread by cdcastellon in General Discussion.

Marc Gasol was picked last year by the Lakers at no48. Was generally considered to be much, much inferior to his talented older brother and some people even went as far as to call him a talentless oaf that would never play in the NBA. He had a breakout season this year where he averaged 16.5 ppg (fourth in league) with an incredible 67.5 FG% and 8.5 rpg (first in league). His team isn't one of the ACB powerhouses but it isn't bad either.

Given his great performance this year, where would you pick him now? It's a given that last year's pick is a major steal now. Strong seven-footers that rebound and play defense well with some solid offensive moves don't exactly grow on trees. I am thinking Top 20 definitely, anyone else thinks he might deserve better?

He did beat out Rudy Fernandez as ACB MVP this year also, probably top 10, however I have heard that he does ot want to come over to Memphis.

He's way better than a guy like Roy Hibbert.

Yes, we can...

I think Marc Gasol would have been a Top 20 pick this year.

He's easily the best young pure center in Europe together with Pekovic...

Does anyone have any info why he beat out Rudy for the award? His stats were worse and Rudy's team did better as well I believe

I think he would probably go somewhere around 15. It really depends on the buyout situation though. I know last year Rudy went 24th because of the buyout. Kevin Pritchard says that Rudy would be a top 5 pick this season

I could probably watch as much college basketball as you can. I choose not to watch all that much, but I've seen Hibbert enough to know that he is an inferior player to Marc Gasol.

....The pivot has passed for the final vote to Rudy Fernandez, who along with her partner Ricky Rubio complete the podium.....Gasol has pulverized all brands of individual awards this season, besides being the most valued player, the greatest leader in rebounds and field goal percentage of 2 points, which receives more and more minutes faults dispute over meeting....

Gotta love Google translation.

Marc Gasol won the MVP because he did a new record, he beated Arvidas Sabonis numbers of MVPs, actually Marc gathered this season 11 MVPs of the weeks.

I say top 20 pick in this draft also.

Btw Marc Gasol is considering go to Memphis, there are rumors he has got offers around 2.5 million dollars per season.

But in Europe, Real Madrid is offering nearly 4 million dollars per season.

In my oponion Marc can be a very decent center in the NBA, a 25 MPG dude with 12 PPG and 7 RPG.

The problem is, this dude, needs to play a lot or he goes FAT mode, he knows it, he knows he must play a lot of minutes to be the best Marc Gasol.

One example:

- 2006/2007 season > he improves and averaged 10 PPG/ 6 RPG 25 MPG, but in all the season i watch him dunk, a couple of times...

- 2007/2008 season > he improves more, and averages 16 PPG /8 RPG 67% fg, and is not afraid of dunk anymore, he almost leads the leagues in dunks!. He has been averagin 34 MPG and has been in the best shape the whole season.

WEll if he is any good and money is his priority then he would be insane not to come to the NBA. A good NBA big makes a lot of money usually way out of proportion to what he is worth. Even more in his favor is that their are a decent number of bigs who are getting up there in age and are on the cusp of retiring.

If he played college ball he would have been a Top5 center in the country for sure and a Top20 draft pick.
Last season I thought he was not good enough, but he had a breakaout this season, he's been named MVP of the spanish league, and he is one of the best European centers

If you speak Spanish or trust in online translators, here there is a very interesant article about the two elder brothers of Gasol family, Pau and Marc. We'll have to wait some years for seeing if the third brother is better than them.
