Post Lottery Mock Draft
Posted: Wed May 21, 2008 7:16 am
1. Chicago: Derrick Rose PG Memphis
Bulls get a PG who can take over the game and make others better. Rose also gives the Bulls a lot of options in terms of how they want to reduce their guard glut.
2. Miami: Michael Beasley PF Kansas State
Not a bad consolation prize for not getting the top pick. Beasley gives them a great inside/out combo with Wade and Miami could easily have a Boston type turnaround if everyone stays healthy.
3. Minnesota: OJ Mayo SG USC
I don't think the agent thing will be any trouble for him or the team that drafts him. Mayo gives them a great wing player and goes great with Randy Foye, a guy Minnesota likes very much.
4. Seattle: Jerryd Bayless G Arizona
I think their is some question as to what position Bayless will play, but I do think he can be a Ben Gordon type scorer. He probably projects as a PG down the road, but probably will start off as first guard off the bench next year for them.
5. Memphis: Brook Lopez C
Memphis has a need for bigs and luckily they get the second best big in the draft. Lopez doesn't scream All-Star type, but he does have great chance to start from day one and score in the post, two things the Grizzles need.
6. New York: Danilo Gallinari SF Italy
The Knicks are quite upset over not only missing out on a top 3 pick, but also falling to six. So they take the best SF prospect and someone who could get a great chance to start. Not a bad consolation prize, but also not who they really wanted.
7. LA Clippers: Eric Gordon SG Indiana
The Clippers have only one true SG on the roster in Cutino Mobley and they get a good one in Gordon. Allows them to trade Maggette for a PG hopefully and gives them a decent team.
8. Milwaukee: Anthony Randolph F LSU
A hybrid tweener in consecutive years for the Bucks. Randolph is an incredible athlete and could be the long term answer at SF. A player who has great potential for an eighth pick.
9. Charlotte: Kevin Love PF UCLA
They cannot count on Sean May ever being healthy and they need to take a ready made player. Love has a great basketball IQ and would maybe be a rookie that Larry Brown would play. A possible starter and a guy sure to be overlooked.
10. New Jersey: DeAndre Jordan C Texas A&M
The Nets really want to get a ready made player like Love, but instead settle for the best trade chip in Jordan. They probably will look to trade whoever they take here, so they pick a guy with a high ceiling and plays an in demand position.
11. Indiana: Russell Westbrook G UCLA
I think Westbrook goes ahead of DJ Augustin because he can play a combo role and because of his great ability to defend. Westbrook fits a fast pace offense like the Pacers and also allows them to look and trade Tinsley for some relief.
12. Sacramento: DJ Augustin PG Texas
The Kings have a hole at PG considering Udrih is a FA, Douby is unproven and they get a good one in Augustin. Though small he can create offense for others and can also adequately defend the PG spot. A good shooter from outside, if was 6-2 would probably be a top pick in the draft.
13. Portland: Donte Greene SF Syracuse
I think the Blazers would prefer to trade this pick rather than take another good but not great player. But if they do settle for the pick, they take Greene, who can fill a need as an off the bench three point shooter. Also allows them to not resign James Jones at an inflated price.
14. Golden State: PF Darell Arthur Kansas
The Warriors need more size and they get it in Arthur. An athletic and agile big who can run up and down the floor and gives them more size. Also a player with NBA type post moves and can rebound quite well.
15. Phoenix: (from Atlanta) Kosta Koufos C Ohio State
The Suns take a C who can shoot from outside and can score outside. Koufos is not a great shot blocker or rebounder, but can adequately defend in a man to man setting. Not a great finisher, but shown flashes.
16. Philadelphia: Maresse Speights PF Florida
The Sixers get a guy who can score in and around the basket and also can defend the PF spot. Not a guy who plays great on the perimeter, but a guy who can rebound quite well.
17. Toronto: Chris Douglas Roberts SG Memphis
The Raptors need a guy who likes to attack the basket instead of settle for jump shots and CDR is it. Also a guy who can score from the midrange and could replace Anthony Parker down the road.
18. Washington: Joe Alexander SF West Virginia
The Wizards take BPA and get a decent guy who can probably play the three and great insurance for Butler, not the most durable player in the league.
19. Cleveland: Chase Buddinger SG Arizona
The Cavs need to get more athletic at the 2 guard spot and they do so with Buddinger. An adequate shooter, should be a good defender with his size and athletic ability. Also a guy who can get out and run, something Cleveland likely would do more.
20. Denver: Nicolas Batum G/F France
The Nuggets have plenty of holes on the wing and with no PG worthy of selection, they fill that hole with Batum. A guy who has fallen as the year continues, but also a guy who has good talent. Fits the Denver get out and run style quite well.
21. New Jersey: Brandon Rush SG Kansas
The Nets need to add some wing depth and get a NBA ready player in Rush. An athletic and capable scorer, would also be good replacement if Jefferson were to be traded or a team wanted a young, cheap wing player and got Rush.
22. Orlando: Javale McGee PF/C Nevada
The Magic have a choice of bigs in McGee or Hibbert, but they take a guy better suited to play PF. McGee is a bad defender and not a great rebounder, but gives them size and someone who can stretch the floor at the 4 position.
23. Utah: Robin Lopez PF/C Stanford
The Jazz need interior defense and the other Lopez twin is that. Not quite the scorer his brother is, but a better rebounder and defender. Gives them flexibility with what they choose to do this off season with their bigs.
24. Seattle (from Phoenix): Jason Thompson C Rider
The Sonics get a beast in the paint that goes great with more perimeter oriented Collison and Wilcox. Yes its another C for the Sonics, but its a scoring C that they currently don't have.
25. Houston: Roy Hibbert C Georgetown
The Rockets take a C that can help ease the minutes of Yao. Hibbert can give them another big body and someone who can play within the offense. Not a great shot blocker or rebounder, but someone who can get them by.
26. San Antonio: Devon Hardin C California
The Spurs need to get younger in the front court and Hardin helps accomplish that. Not a great scorer, but can rebound and block shots, all the bigs need to do on the Spurs not named Duncan.
27. New Orleans: Courtney Lee SG Western Kentucky
A guy who filled it up in college, but likely won't get the same chance in the league. But a guy who can score from outside and someone who can run. Also great insurance with Bonzi Wells a FA and Peterson not having a great season.
28. Memphis (from LA Lakers): JJ Hickson PF NC State
A guy who might have gone lottery next year, but still makes the first round. Gives Memphis another big and someone who works close to the basket.
29. Detroit: Alexis Anjica C Serbia
Not a guy I think comes over next year, but a guy who could be quite valuable down the road. A decent prospect even if he does come over, but a few years of seasoning and he could be a lot better.
30. Boston: J.R. Giddens SG New Mexico
A better prospect than his draft slot, but a guy with questionable character. Fills a need as Allen is aging, Allen seems on the way out and no other 2 guard on the roster. Giddens can score, but hopefully he can become a defender as well.
Second round
31. Minnesota from Miami: Ty Lawson PG UNC
32. Seattle: Mario Chalmers PG Kansas
33. Portland (from Memphis): DJ White PF Indiana

36. Portland (from NY): Omar Casppi SF Israel
37. Milwaukee: Bill Walker SG/SF Kansas State

39. Chicago: Shan Foster SG Vanderbilit

57. San Antonio: Gary Forbes SF Massachusetts
58. LA Lakers: Josh Duncan PF Xavier
59. Detroit: Richard Roby SG Colorado
60. Boston: Novica Velickovic PF Serbia
