Danny Green.... A 2nd Rd Steal

Post#1 » by pdub15 » Tue May 5, 2009 9:08 pm

After reviewing a lot of the Mock Drafts out there I have to say I think it is a complete slap to Danny Green that all of them have him as a late 2nd rd pick or going undrafted. It makes me wonder if anyone was watching the Tar Heels this year. To start off look at the body of work all 4 years at UNC.

SEASON MIN PTS REB AST TO A/T STL BLK PF FG% FT% 3P%
2005-2006 15.3 7.5 3.7 1.1 1.3 .80 .7 1.0 1.6 .433 .792 .355
2006-2007 13.6 5.2 2.8 1.1 .8 1.35 .6 .7 1.4 .411 .848 .296
2007-2008 22.3 11.5 4.9 2.0 1.9 1.04 1.2 1.2 2.3 .469 .873 .373
2008-2009 27.4 13.1 4.7 2.7 1.7 1.65 1.8 1.3 2.2 .471 .852 .418

But this year he proved he will be a steal in the draft. 6'6 210lbs with ability to guard 2's, 3's, and in certain cases some 1's. No matter if he is playing a defender on the ball or off he creates turnovers and frustrates other teams main offensive player. He shoots the 3pt shot with consistency, plays well off the ball, and plays a lot stronger then his 210lb frame. He is a late 2nd rd steal that is going to go right to a playoff team and be able to help their bench a lot.

I agree with this. He doesn't have sky high potential, but so what? He can defend and make open shots. That's role players do in this league.

No way he is a Butler. He is a way better player than Butler right now as it is.

Until he shows it on the court, he's not better than Butler.

Love Danny. He was great for the Heels in his career. He improved his game every year and I expect to see that trend continue. I think you are exaggerating his defense just a bit though. He has below average lateral quickness relative to the NBA. His strength, anticipation, and long arms more than made up for it in college, but I think he will struggle to stay in front of quicker players who can put the ball on the floor in the NBA. He also has a tough time scoring when he is not left wide open. He has no ability as of now to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. However, I think he will improve in these areas each year in the league and I expect him to develop into a great role player on some team just like he was at UNC.

I also don't think it's a "slap" to Danny Green as to where he's being projected. The early to mid 2nd round is an accurate representation of his current skill set.

Anyone else see a Raja Bell type player?
If I had a late first I'd definitely use it on a guy like Danny Green.
I think his work ethic and winners mentality would be a good addition to any roster.

I definitely see a lot of Raja in him. Though I think he is further along in skills than Raja was at that age.

Trust me I'm not exaggerating his defense. His lateral quickness is very deseptive. He also has ability to attack the rim when putting the ball on the floor he just didn't get to showcase as much with the team he had at UNC. If you look at clips from his 1st 2 seasons at UNC he would put the ball on the floor and attack the rim alot because he was still improving his jumper.

I watched him at a casual 3-pt. contest a few weeks ago. That perimeter shot is a little squeaky. Hard not to like the other facets of his game, though.

Yeah, he's a plus-defender with good size, length and versatility. He is a stat-stuffer and is as responsible with the ball as you could ever hope for from a non-PG.

I see Danny topping out as a Stacey Augmon or Josh Childress type. Maybe a more realistic expectation would be Dahntay Jones, but I think Danny's intangibles are stronger. Offensively, you'll look up at the scoreboard and say, "how did that guy end up with 11 points?!" Defensively, he'll be a winning team's defensive linchpin on the perimeter. I don't think his college block or 3-point shooting will translate to the NBA, but this overall efficiency will, I believe.

Kudos to the OP; I also see him as a real diamond in the rough this year.

I love Danny Green - but his statistics with Ty Lawson out of the lineup were pretty bad. Inflated maybe?

His defense is unquestionable though, many key blocks last year for UNC

Eh, he didn't look too great when Lawson returned for the tournament, either. His AST:TO ratio took a nosedive, and his shooting efficiency was lower, both of which are out of character for him in the postseason. Green has played well with Ty in the past, though.

I think it had more to do with Roy giving Wayne an even larger role in the offense late in the season, at Danny's expense.
