Re: SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 15: SPURS AT BLAZERS, 15-11-2022, 9PM (CT)
4TH Q: SPURS 110 BLAZERS 117
Let's start at 6:50 left in the 4TH Q. We were up 106-100. In the rest of the Q, we scored FOUR points. 4.
FOUR.
In the rest of the Q from that point onward we were outscored 17-4.
In that time span we missed seven shots, five of which were missed 3s.
In that time span we committed four fouls.
In that time span we committed four TOs.
Just a poor stretch.
Fatigue probably played a part. But a killer mentality to play with a lead and learning to close out games is a skillset, too. Combine those two together and we have a bitter missed opportunity from which we hopefully learn and improve upon.
There were some positives. We moved the ball much better and had 33 assists.
Jakob had a career night with 31 points on 14-17, 3-5FTs, 5 assists, and 1 block. We had a great game plan that exploited our interior game and featured Jakob significantly. He did very well, even with leaving several points on the floor because he missed bunnies rather than dunking them. Nobody will ever understand why this happens. He also grabbed a game high 14 rebounds including game high 5 on O. Just a stellar game from him, highlighting his growing importance for us on both ends.
All our bigs fared well in this game. Each was efficient, contributed on both ends, grabbed boards, passed for assists, etc. Even if they didn't get many scoring chances, they did well with the chanes they had. Sochan chipped in 6 on 2-3, 2-2FTs (an improvement here), along with 4 boards, 4 assists, and 2 game high blocks. He guarded 1 through 5, including some primary key defensive assignments like several on Dame and Simons tonight, brought up the ball at times, screened well, moved his feet and got into position well. Always active arms, head on a swivel, gives the ball to the right guy at the right time most times. Led us with +20. His strength will come as his body matures, and his and anticipation with respect to opponent tendencies will come with more reps but we have a very solid foundation with him.
Diop led the bench with 10 points on 5-7, 0-1 from 3, 4 boards (bench high 3 on O), 2 assists, and 1 steal. He was solid on D and O, was disruptive with his length and movement on perimeter D, and was good in transition, too. Bassey scored 6 on 3-4 along with 5 boards (2 on O), 1 assist, and 1 block. Roby chipped in 4 on 2-4, 0-1 from 3, 0-1FT in just 6 minutes as the 10th man.
Devin plays beautiful basketball both aesthetically and in terms of two-way impact. His 7-15, 4-8 from 3, 3-3FTs for 21 points showed the three-way scoring that we saw only flashes of last season. This year he's calling his own shot, getting to his spot, taking 3s off the dribble not just from C&S, driving more, and had better handles to get by his man with his crossover and behind the back dribble moves. Some good crafty finishes at the rim after absorgin physicality, too. Each game it's like he shows a bit more of his game. All the while he's tasked with facilitating a bit more to ease the pressure off Tre, which has spotty results if we're being honest, but it all goes into the experience bank that will pay with interest later. Quicker decisions and quicker moves with the ball (of course we have to be moving well to be open for him to pass it) will help. He tends to be more stationary with the ball up top, meaning unlike Tre who dribbles around in a certain area before deciding, Devin instead stays in that above the top of the arc position until we move ot a spot or he makes a move. Something to think about in terms of how he's defended and what he can do about it. In thinking about facilitating, he passed a couple of more open scoring chances for TO passes that were telegraphed as he was wither in the air or facing the intended target rather than the basket. Again, these will go in the experience bank and grow as his game. But a terrific overall effort on both ends. He also had 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Keldon was too muted in the first half scoring only 6 on 2-3. A continuation of the previous game, he came alive in the second half to finish with 20 on pushing through for 6-14, 4-8 from 3, 4-5FTs along with 5 boards, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Like Jakob and Devin, Keldon also had 4 TOs, which given that they were our most used players. Unlike the others, THREE of Keldon's four TOs came within the last four minutes of the game. Just a weird, uncharacteristic stretch. I do like how he's fighting his way through some slumps and contributes in other ways.
Tre looked like he needed the smaller minutes. He was off his game with some weaker handles and poor efficiency. He finished with only 2 points on 1-6, 0-1 from 3, He grabbed 2 boards, but his steady presence provided a confidence we rely on and resulted in team high 9 assists, and team high 3 steals in starter low 22 minutes. We are noticeably better with him running point, and his D tenacity is a reliable front point of the disruptive defensive spear for us.
Our normally contributing bench was frankly a let down, particularly our vets. I don't understand how a vet has a habit of missing layups with not using the glass or laying it up with weird angles. Just like I don't understand how Jakob misses bunnies rather than dunking. But Doug (2-8) and JRich (2-7) combined for 4-15 from the field and 1-9 from 3. In 17 minutes, Doug registered no other stat. Traditional stats don't record the impact of constant off ball movement, so there's that, and he's one of hte best in the business at it. But we pay him mostly for what he's best at and he hasn't provided that. JRich was less irritating with less ball stopping ISO, and led the bench with 5 assists.
Our bench only scored 30 points (although everyone who got minutes scored), and made only ONE 3 on 11 attempts.
When we win from the 3s, we have a winning record. It's amazing what a consistent barometer that is for us, and it's a leveller and cover for when other things go wrong, too. We made only 9-29, both well under our average. We allowed six more 3s for an 18-point deficit. Combine that with 19 TOs which cost us 25 points. However, we were actually +6 in points from TOs because we got 31 off of their TOs.
Add to this our huge 66-46 points in the paint and we're actually coming out ahead even with their 3s advantage. So where else did we lose points? Well they were a +7 in made FTs. We made 13-17, better than several of our previous games, but they were the more aggressive team in driving and it cost us 20-26FTs against.
Considering our travel B2B, we had much better flow and energy and heart in this game. In that sense, it was an improvement. We executed a game plan well, kept fighting back from deficits well, overcame several big runs against to get the lead back on good two-way flow until it all fell apart in the final 6:50. One pattern for us is giving too big runs, and another is things collectively falling apart late in games. It's like it's contagoius - missed easy shots, turnovers, ball stops moving, fouls team-wide.
In fairness, after trading away our previous starting back court, we came into the season with Tre, he who shall not be named, Blake, and Jrich in spot minutes. It's why we cut Hall. Then we got super thin at the 1 spot, signed Hall, and are relying on Tre all the more. It forces us to try Keldon and Devin - and Sochan! - at the point more. In the long run, this benefits us as they get more experience. Trying to make lemonade. Along the way, we're struggling through consistency and flow in our play especially under pressure. We'll get better in late game situations and with expanded games with more reps.
It's a pity we didn't reward oureslves for better play, but we played a fun to watch game, were more competitive, and left room for improvement. A near ideal situation. Hopefully some rest results in us putting together better play more consistently for better results.

I do hope Tre returns. The lone true PG and so important to our movement on O. Win or lose, it's key to get good habits and learning from trying to play the right way rather than away from it if that makes sense.
Geezus.
In his entire career, when has Zach Collins NOT been injured?!?!?!?!?!
Very disappointing.
Really liked the pick and he showed flashes but was chronically injured.

I was hoping and expecting this to be one of the first replies. You did not disappoint. Jroy have it all.

It's actually the first true healthy stretch of his career. For now this looks like a short-term thing. I get why fans think otherwise, but this isn't the same thing that made him miss so many games previously.
He's been playing well, too, so we welcome his return:

The day that Yakub shoots at least a respectable 70% from the free throw line, he is going to take off. That is the difference.

Well, there's improvement, and then there's accepting the reality that a career long pattern presents: he's never even had anything starting with a 6 in pro FT percentage. If we get anything starting with a 5 it's an improvement at this point so... It's just something you live with barring some anomaly of an improvement.
