4TH Q: SPURS 120 PELS 116
Thanks, gents, for holding the fort. Had to see the end of the Jays win YEAH!
We won ugly but we won not only the game with Wemby fouled out but held our own when he sat.
Didn't expect a 7-0 Dylan run that sparked a 13-0 run but it was great. Second highest bench points behind Luke with 13-5-3, fighting through inefficiency. He will learn to get better at finishing through swatting hands at the rim. Team best 6-6FTs stands out well.
How crucial has Luke been? Wemby was robbed of a triple double, something I hope the league rectifies, giving us 29-11-9 blocks with 2 assists, 1 steal, 0 TOs before fouling out. He adjusted well to doubles. It was criminal that he only got 4FTs.
Luke gave us 14-12-4, with a game high 9 of those boards being on O.
We used French Vanilla more this game which was good. We got 4 more PITP and made three more 3s in the end, but there were a lot of wasted possessions along the way.
As Rusty pointed out, woeful FTs again, only 17-26, and way too many TOs again, 18, which cost us 24 points. Any credit to the opponent for D pressure was matched by our own lack of focus and poor ball protection.
I also felt there was a let down from the whoopass high of the first game but we have to realize teams are waiting to make a statement versus us now.
Still, we won with a contribution from everyone. In addition to PITP, we also won the rebound battle 59-45, O boards, 20-16, second chance points 26-16, and fast break points 23-19.
I appreciate that Champie got a crucial 3 and O board putback and that Barnes also hit a 3 and made those clutch 3s. But they're both set up in limited ways and
I now realize that with Fox, Sochan, Kelly, and Lindy out, our sub options are limited to Garcia as a heater scorer or other two-ways and BB, and so Mitch went with mostly an 8-man unit with some spare minutes going to rookie Carter and vet McL.
I look forward to reinforcements returning so we have more options on both ends.
Ball protection, particularly in end of Q situations is something to work on. Just a lack of focus a lot this game. At least we got the ball inbounds well enough.
Castle struggled with inefficiency but also with TOs, accounting for 9(!) froma lot of wayward dribbling and some from erratic passes. Channel the energy better.
Dev. I didn't realize he was the second highest scorer tonight. And he led us with six 3s. But it was on 14 attempts. He must have one of the worst end of Q made shot efficiency cumulatively since we drafted him. Like at some point we have to roll the dice on Garcia in end of Q situations. Each has proven missing and making. It looks like Dev's forward release and body almost falling away from the shot is more pronounced this season. Weird mechanics. Like he's pushing the shot. Lots of rimming out. I like when he's physical on drives, when he gets his pet elbow Js. But he had only two non-restricted Js, missing both.
We missed Keldon after he fouled out. He was crashing the O boards, driving with physicality, and was a historically a terrific, physical defender versus their bicep flexing PF. I like beating flexing showoffs. Anyway, KJ chipped in an efficient 8 and 10 boards, 5 on O!
Ok. I'd much rather learn lessons with a W. Time was we'd fold with Wemby sitting let alone fouled out. But we kept pushing through, showed terrific resilience, and found ways to make winning plays despite tripping up along the way.
We have to make sure that D effort is non-negotiable. Got a bit janky there for spells. It's great that we can look back at the end of the season to early season Ws like this one while we fill the improvement well along the way.

I mean, I'll take the win but god we were SLOPPY tonight. Castle just looked completely out of sync both in passes that were way off the mark and his ball handling. More concerning for me was it looked like he completely lost all aggressiveness towards the rim which made him look like a star last game. He really should just be a corner 3 guy btw and also needs to clean up his FTs. That's Rondo level bad.
Harper's decision making is...terribad. The amount of times he forced a shot or didn't make the easy pass was mind numbing. He isn't caught up to the speed of the nba yet as seen by his many reaches this game, though I do like the aggressiveness on defense. The stat at the start told it all with 4pts and 4 fouls. HOWEVER props to our coaching staff for leaving him out there to fight through it and kept putting the ball in his hands. It could have...maybe should have, lost us this game but I think it's important for his development.
I will say I've completely been wrong about Vassell in the offseason. I don't think we can afford to get rid of him unless we are getting a Giannis level guy in return. He saved this game for us and was really the only help Wemby got.
I'm going to keep banging the drum for DJG especially in a game like this where we literally can't score outside of 2 guys. On that note I hated our bench rotation tonight. No chemistry, though I understand this is the time to play around with lineups. Need more playmakers out there instead of just scorers.
I won't really comment on Wemby this game cause I don't have much different to say than the Mavs game. He's exceptional

I dont think you guys realize that this is the first time an NBA team has started 2-0 while playing a game in overtime on a Friday night during an odd numbered year in October on an overcast night not during a full moon when a mongoose does not see its shadow since 1913!
