Spurs waive McClinton

Post#1 » by MjJunkYard » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:54 pm

Why would the Spurs waive McClinton before training camp? Do they already have 15 players under contract for 2009-2010 and want to give him a chance to catch a shot with another team? It doesn't make sense to me

14 guaranteed contracts as of today, with guys already ahead of him for number 15. spurs might have wanted him to sign overseas like gist did last season but he didnt and they dont have the room for him.

McClinton himself on Twitter said that he requested the waive.

This move was expected, especially after the signing of Keith Bogans. Plus, I'd rather see us give one last chance to Malik Hairston. McClinton might make the NBA in a couple of years but first he's gotta establish himself. Another option for him could be to sign with a team that is rebuilding and see some playing time there but there was certainly no playing time left for him here.

I think it was between him and Hariston after we signed Bogans and i'm glad we kept Hariston. But I would of rather waived Williams and held onto McClinton, I'd feel alot better having a third PG on the roster rather than another swing man.

I thought Mcclinton was a steal at 51 but he had a terrible summer camp. We bring in guys that are already established like Boguns, Ratliff, plus Fin resigns and there really wasn't any room for him. The spurs must be really high on Georgie to not go after a 3rd string PG. I mean its not like we aren't throwing extra cash around. I figured if there was any insurance player we would need its a PG even before Ratliff and Boguns.

Compared to McClinton, I'd rather have us keep Marcus Williams or Malik Hairston. Sure, he was a steal at 51 in a very very weak draft. But in a normal draft, I think McClinton is drafted exactly where he should be. Plus, SGs with a PG's body needs to prove they can score first. He couldn't even do that in Summer League.

I think if he can't get his shot off in SL, there is no way he can do it in the NBA...
