GT: Grizzlies vs. Spurs

Post#1 » by Nolan » Thu Dec 22, 2011 5:17 pm

When: 8:30 PM ET, December 26, 2011
Where: AT&T Center, San Antonio, TX

VS

Starting Lineups:

Grizzlies:
PG - Mike Conely
SG - Tony Allen
SF - Rudy Gay
PF - Zach Randolph
C - Marc Gasol

Spurs:
PG - Tony Parker
SG - Manu Ginobili
SF - Richard Jefferson
PF - Tim Duncan
C - DeJuan Blair

Well after a long and frustrating lockout its finally time to kick off the season and we`re going to be doing it on boxing day against the team that embarrassed us in the playoffs last year.

The key to this game is going to be the battle in the paint. Z-Bo and Gasol killed us in the paint last year so we`re going to have to find a way to stop them. As it stands right now the Grizzlies are very very thin up front with Arthur`s injury, so if we can get one of Z-Bo or Gasol in foul trouble early on it could go a long way in helping us win this game.

Go Spurs!!

We're gonna win. Hopefully Pop uses Splitter more this game.

Expect a tight win !
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

Spurs needed another real big. Looks like Frank Tha Tank is the big they've added.

I'm interested to see Frank tha Tank match up against Randolph.
From their "fighting styles" It appears both studied at the same basketball dojo.

Should be interesting to see the "fight" in the Spurs, if they took last years defeat personally.

They were out hustled and dominated in paint.

If the Spurs can do better with offensive rebounding, with all the players on the roster that can create off the bounce, they should be a tough team to stop.

Looks like Hassel and Luke Zeller are both going to be on the 15 man roster for opening day. I'm still not convinced those two are NBA players but we'll see how things go.

I used to watch Zeller when he played for Bakersfield. I'm not sure he likes to get physical and do the dirty work. Like Bonner, not really a "big".

I would have preferred Greg Stiemsma or Omar Samhan in his place if they we trying out young "bigs".

Frank Tha Tank is really the 4th "Big Man" on the squad. He can make free throws, set hard screens, and his college performance indicates he's a solid offensive rebounder.

Hopefully the front office has found the Gary Neal of bigs.

Like Tim Duncan said today, we'll see if the bigs playing with him sink or swim. Throw their arses in then!!!

I hope Frank ends up being a steal, because we need a big body that can do the dirty work. Blair fits that mold but his size holds him back on the defensive end.

Stiemsma made the Celtics today and i've really liked what i've seen from him this preseason.

Frank Hassell was waived apparently

No idea why we aren't trying to go after Fesenko - he's younger, but has experience

Fesenko would be perfect. Big body that can play and has some experience.

Oh and yes Hassell and Zeller have been waived. Two other moves I don't really get, you'd think they'd at least hang onto one of them until the guaranteed deadline.

Man oh man, do I not want to see these guys again. Just a tough tough matchup for us.

Hopefully we can come away with the W and start the season on a positive note.

This is the first season since TD was drafted where I am going in knowing that we can't win a title. It's a strange feeling.

Perhaps Marcus Cousin will be joining the roster.

First half over with. 44-43, Memphis up by one.

Well, some stuff probably won't change considering we didn't make a big personnel change.

We rely on the 3 ball too much. There's a lack of post up players on our team. Most of our shots are from way out on the perimeter. Manu and Parker has huge trouble getting into the paint area. Duncan got into early foul trouble but their frontcourt hasn't hurt us too much. Problem is that they're getting very efficient shot attempts. Defensively, I really doubt we'll be any different than last year. We're not that big, we lack shotblockers, not a strong rebounding team. Perimeter defense could also improve cause they're getting to the paint area way too easy.

Some bright spots, James Anderson looks real good. He looks very confident out on the floor shooting, scoring, and making plays. Kawhi Leonard's offense needs a lot of work but his activity on the defensive end is apparent. He's getting offensive rebounds. Manu only recorded 2 steals so far but he knocked atleast 6 balls loose. He's so great at getting deflections.

RJ actually played really well so far but how his shots are coming are still the same as last year, which is 3 point shots and really long 2s. Gone are the days RJ take it to the rim. But I guess this is the new RJ and as long as he's making his shots and generally playing good defense, then he's doing well enough.

We're down one only because Memphis got real sloppy with the ball too recording 14 turnovers already. We've shot 12 more times than them but they shot 53 percent from the field and got to the line 6 more times.

Spurs win 95-82.

3rd quarter proves to be the difference. Kawhi and Tiago played very well IMO because it was their activity on the defensive end that proves to be the difference. Tiago played very good individual defense and rebounded the ball well. Kawhi just went out and got offensive rebounds and steals. Manu is just Manu. Everyone who played significant minutes contributed.

Has to be noted, Memphis also killed themselves with 24 turnovers. Also, I think having Rudy Gay makes them go to Gasol and Zach a lot less than last year. Rudy Gay played well, but it did take away their bigman advantage. They combine for 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Bought team pass this year, i'm watching all Spurs game :)

Turnovers were the story of this game, Memphis just had way too many.

But the big three did all play well, RJ was great, Splitter was excellent on the defensive end and Anderson and Leonard were solid off the bench.

Didn't see the game, but am glad the win was strong

Good to hear about the younger guys! Especially Splitter.

Also, I think Blair and Splitter is not a good fit together. Problem is, Duncan isn't on the floor all the time. When Duncan isn't in the game, either Blair or Splitter are better off paired with Bonner. Meaning I think Bonner will continue to get regular rotation minutes on this team because what Blair and Splitter brings to the table is too much alike. Rebounding and energy. It's just that Splitter has better size.
