The Spurs have assigned first-round draft pick Cory Joseph to the NBA Development League’s Austin Toros.

The move likely was made to give Joseph and opportunity for more playing. Through the Spurs’ first five games, Joseph had played in four games. He was averaging 5.5 minutes per game, 0.5 points, o.8 rebounds, o.8 assists and was shooting 14.7 percent from the field.

The former Texas standout will return to his old college town to attempt to rekindle some momentum for his career.

Joseph and Gary Neal currently are practicing with the Spurs behind closed doors at the Spurs Training Facility.

Joseph will make his Austin debut Thursday night when the Toros host the Maine Red Claws at the Cedar Park Center.

The assignment isn’t a surprise and likely will mean the Spurs’ current roster should remain intact during the early stages of Manu Ginobili’s recovery.

This isn't a suprsing move this kid still needs some work and he'll get minutes in the D-League.

And Gary Neal is coming back and expected to play v. Golden State. At first, when Manu went down, I thought maybe Cory could steal some minutes at the 2 if Neal doesn't recover quickly, but then it's good that he'll get extended playing time in the D-League.
