Has Mills signed???????

Post#1 » by Marlow » Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:13 pm

Saw some press about Patty Mills signing, but haven't seen it confirmed anywhere.

Anyone know what is happening?

Just found this in the Australian newspaper - The Age.

Australian basketballer Patty Mills hopes to be back playing in the NBA within the next week.

Mills signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs yesterday, but is unable to begin playing or training with the club until a problem with his US work visa is resolved.

The contract is reported to be a two-year deal but hinges on Mills receiving his visa.

His US agent, Aaron Goodwin, told the San Antonio News Express he hoped the visa issue would be expedited and resolved in the next week allowing the Spurs to put Mills on court.

"It shouldn't be too much longer," Goodwin told the Express.

"There is a deal in principle. He just has to get a visa."

The Spurs, who lost back-up point guard TJ Ford to an injury forced retirement last week, are reportedly desperate to get Mills into their line-up after starting point guard Tony Parker injured his hamstring against Minnesota yesterday. (March 22 Aus time)

In Parker’s absence, back-up shooting guard Gary Neal and swingmen Manu Ginobili and Stephen Jackson juggled the point guard role but none of the three are suited to the position in the long-term.

Mills return to the court is also seen as a bonus for the Boomers heading towards the London Olympics, as Mills had not played since January due to a dispute between the player and his former Chinese Basketball Association club Xianjing Flying Tigers.

Mills also received a commendation from the NBL this week following his early season stint with the Melbourne Tigers.

Mills was short-listed for the NBL’s rookie of the year award although Sydney’s Anatoly Bose remains favourite to take out the honour.

The nomination is unusual as Mills had spent two years in the NBA before his lockout-enforced stint at home.
