Can you see Tim Duncan leaving?

Post#1 » by JDRoma » Thu Feb 2, 2012 6:34 am

Can you guys see Tim Duncan leaving to go to Contending team?

For example, if Dwight goes to the Nets and they trade all of there assets can you see him going to the Nets?

For example:

D-Will
Morrow
Hedo
Duncan
Dwight

I can't see him wanting to do that. I understand that he might want to taste one more championship, but he's not in the same position as guys as Karl Malone who never tasted one before. Even winning one in that kind of way wouldn't be sweet IMO. And I'd say him going to Miami makes more sense if he was to chase a ring.

I just think he would like to play in the Nets because of Avery

I really don't see him leaving and I really don't see him going to the Nets. We still have a very competitive team and right now I think we're one of the real dark horses in the west.

Also how the Nets even be able to sign him in that scenario. They'll already have two max players in Dwight and Deron plus Hedo's inflated salary.

He's going to be getting at least 10 million a year from us or right around that number so I doubt he leaves for the MLE.

Without sounding too much like a homer, I cant see any scenario where Timmy leaves.

Also I'll be interested to see what we offer him next year, wouldnt be surprised if it is less than 10M based on his part-time usage. I'd love to see him signed for 7-8M

My guess is we give Duncan somewhere in line of 10 million a year. I believe that was what David Robinson got in his last year. But then again, that's 10 years ago. I don't remember what was the average salary for players at that year. I'm assuming 10 million 10 years ago was a lot more than what 10 million is today.

No. Duncan will be a career Spur. Why would he even want to go play for a "contender" when he's already won 4 rings and he's already on and contending team? Why he'd leave a top 5 team to go to a bottom 10. . .yeah, I can't see any logic in that.

The Nets aren't better than the Spurs even if they Dwight added to them with NO pieces moved at all. That team needs a hell of a lot more help than just one dude. Deron is evacuating from New Jersey at the end of the season anyway. That was a huge mistake for the Nets. All they did was mortage their future on a gamble that failed.

Look at the current Nets, just as bad as before even with Deron because they traded too many pieces. Knicks: even worse after trading for Melo because they traded too many pieces. Meanwhile both the Jazz and Nuggets are above .500. Speaking of the Nuggets, they even look dangerous and like they'll stick around for awhile.

Spurs: Have tons of pieces and Duncan has 2 high quality players around him that he trusts and likes. There's no reason for him to leave.

Duncan will be a Spur for life. Just as Kobe will be a Laker and James will be a....lol too soon, but Duncan will never leave

That sentence still annoys me to even think about the fact that the guy who posted it was insulting enough to claim that the Spurs aren't a contending team.

Since when is being between 1-5 in the power rankings/standings for the entire season not contending anymore? That's basically the definition of being strong contending team.

I would agree to an extent.
But the spurs esp last season looked like the mavs of old.
Alot of regular season flash but no playoff substance.
I think it's reasonable to assume that on the large part our window had closed.
Even with our midseason additions it's only ajar, we are by no means a lock to get to the finals.

But you are right, it is annoying that we have a team that has only won 50 games other than lockout years, every year since duncan was drafted gets written off as a contender.
Fate rarely calls upon us at a time of our choosing

We were never a lock for the Finals man. Lakers/Mavs/Suns were always ranked ahead of us in most seasons, sometimes two of the three! SA never gets respect until we get to the Finals. And at that point, it's way too late for anybody's opinion to change and still matter. It's like, okay, he's my pick to win the race now! Since the race is almost over and he's ahead by 3 laps.

We lost in the playoffs because of injuries. That isn't like the Mavs of old. Mavs of old were good in the season and rarely did well in the playoffs. They were NEVER injured. They were almost always at 100%. That isn't the same thing at all. The only thing similar is "good record, then lost in 1st-2nd round". The rest is totally different.

Our window "closed" in 2009-2010. It reopened last year, and it's still open this year. But I don't expect next season to be as fortunate, and I especially don't think the year after that is going to be kind. This is probably our last chance.

As for the door being ajar, I dunno dude. We're clearly at least #4 in the NBA. No one's a lock for the Finals, but we're imo favored to make it to the WCF. since we've owned OKC during their entire existance, I'll take my chances against them there. Only thing that really scares me about them is that they're favored by the league, so I don't expect any of our games against them to be called entirely down the middle.
