The Atlanta Hawks have named Mike Budenholzer the team’s new head coach, President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Danny Ferry announced. Budenholzer becomes the 12th full-time head coach in Hawks history.

“We are thrilled to have Mike as the next coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He has an incredible basketball acumen and has a keen awareness of the league and what it takes to be successful," Ferry said. "His experience and four championships over the last 17 years provide a tremendous foundation for his leadership of our team.”

Budenholzer, 43, spent the past 19 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, including the final 17 seasons as an assistant coach.

“I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of the San Antonio Spurs organization for the last 19 years. I knew it would have to be a tremendous situation for me to leave and clearly coming to Atlanta as the head coach of the Hawks is perfect for me,” said Budenholzer. “Ownership’s commitment to taking this organization to the next level and creating a unique and special culture, partnering with a general manager like Danny Ferry who I have great respect for, and building a roster that has terrific potential because of the existing core and the ensuing flexibility presents a rare and uniquely positive opportunity.”

Budenholzer had long been considered the eventual successor to Gregg Popovich with the Spurs.

All I can say is i'm shocked that after 19 years he's actually taken a head coaching job with another franchise. I really hope he does well.

Ditto. As a Hawk fan I'm excited. But perplexed he wouldn't just wait a couple more seasons for Duncan and Pop to retire.

19 years is a really long time, this must have really felt like a good situation for him.

I'm surprised. I guess SA never straight up had a meeting/convo with him saying the job was his after Pop left.

Great hire by ATL

I would assume that Brett Brown has been promised that job once Pop calls it a career.

Suns fan here.. I have a question.

since Budenholzer was hired by the Hawks in middle of your guys' playoff run and already clinched a spot in the finals, is Budenholzer still gonna be on the bench for you guys until the finals are over? How does that work?

He'll stay with the team until the season is over.

That convo might of happened and Mike might of just wanted to branch out on his rather than risk being the next Brian Shaw.

I think Atlanta is a good spot for him. He's got a relatively blank slate to start with and he'll be working with a GM he knows and trusts.

Hawks fan here. I'm a very big fan of how your organization builds a team, especially through drafting, continuity, and fundamentals. I am hopefully that this will become a centerpeice of basketball culture in Atlanta.
