It would of been very tough/near impossible for us to sign big Al.

But Timmy and Al doesn't complement each other defensively. Al can't be guarding quicker PFs. And if we have Duncan doing that, you lose the shotblocking and weakside help Duncan provides.
Offensively, it also changes a lot of what our offense is right now. Al is mostly a post up player. Not a good P&R guy or at the 18-20 feet shots Duncan does. He can make the 15 feet jumpers though, but that's not a shot that our offense generates.
