Offensively, they say he's a decent passer from the high post/FT line area, but he wasn't used as a facilitator from that area on their offense. In ours, the bigs gets to make plays there.
As a passer from the low post, LMA is awful. He's also strictly a Pick and Pop player. He rarely rolls to the basket so I'd like to see how his finishing ability this season because he can't always pop can't he? I envision using him like we do Duncan offensively and even Duncan mix it up.
As a low post defender, they say he's solid. He's not a rim protector though. As a perimeter defender he's pretty good, and that's really good to know because for years, Tiago has been the one chasing the bigs with range while Duncan patrols the paint. I worried that Duncan now has to go chase guys around further out on the perimeter. Glad to know that's not going to be the case.
Seems pretty spot on.
My concern when the season finished and the rumours started was that he was a big that simply shot too many jumpers.
But then you think how much better the Spurs offense is, how well they likely know LMA strengths and weaknesses from about 40-50 games they've defended him in his career (even the recent effort from Splitter) and the fact that he won't just be given the ball and told to shoot a jumper and score like he seemed to be in the Portland offense.
Pop has work to do, but it's exciting to think what could be.
Living in the Northwest, I've had the opportunity to see a lot of LMA.
He is as good as advertised. Basically, he has carried Portland since the departure of Roy from that team. I always likened him to TD. Amazing mid-range jumper for a man his size. When he gets going, he can be nearly unstoppable. His turn-around jumper from the left block can at times be un-guardable. He is very hard to defend in the paint when scoring as well. He's labeled as a jump shooting big man, but his post game and back to the basket scoring has really improved over the years. His defense is really underrated as well. Doesn't get the credit he deserves. Not as good a rim protector as TD in his prime, but again underrated. Fans are going to fall in love with him. Much like the big 3.
Like was mentioned, In Portland the offense ran through him. He often would throw up a contested shot & somehow it would go in.
