REPORT: Spurs to sign Livio Jean-Charles

Friday morning, word came out via EuroHoops.net that the Spurs will stay on the youth track, as they intend to sign 22-year old 6’9″ forward Livio Jean-Charles, whom they drafted with 28th pick back in the 2013 NBA Draft.

Jean-Charles just helped ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne win the French Championship, where Jean-Charles played in 36 games with averages of 22.6 minutes, 6.4 points and 4.7 rebounds. Spurs guard Tony Parker is the current President of ASVEL as well.

Last summer, Jean-Charles got his first exposure in the Spurs’ system when he played with their Summer League teams in Utah (3 games) and Las Vegas (2 games).

Kinda surprised actually. He really didn't look all that great last year, leaving him overseas for another season seems like a better plan. Then again sending him to Austin might be the best thing for him.

Don't think the Spurs actually have a choice. He is an FA from his European team this year. As he was a first rounder, he can show up and demand his rookie contract. IIRC, if he didn't demand it after he became a European free agent, his guaranteed contract would be gone; therefore this is his last opportunity to get the guaranteed money, without arriving at a deal with SAS...

edit: their only other option would be to release him entirely.

Alright so taking that into account this makes a little more sense (saving buyout dollars).

I hope he sticks, he has potential to be a great role-player for us

I hope he can turn out to be a more athletic Luc R. M'bah, but with a respectable 3PT shot... some slash-drive game would be a bonus, too! But getting tip-ins, cuts, lobs, and able to spot up and shoot as well...

An athletic, rangy, floor-stretching, cagey garbage-man hybrid-foward is how I hope he turns out..

I know we're trying to get younger after last year, but I just don't see these guys as ready rotation players. We are not going to have the depth we had last year.

Offensively and seasoning-wise - not as deep, no... But athletically and defensively (longer, more athletic) over the season we really should be better than last year, which will be interesting to see what all the guys can bring there off the bench, and mix in with starters at times for dynamic, quick line-ups...

And, potentially more diverse offensively in terms of different ways guys can contribute, just not with as much saviness (West/Diaw), depending on the development into rotation being - Simmons-improved-rotation, Anderson-yr3-improved, Murray-scattered-flashes/potentially more, Mills, Manu, Dedmon-paint, potential other back-up big (a solid stretch 4??) )

Will miss West and Diaw's offensive prowress, but not their lack of overall defensive size around the rim, even though they were not bad team defenders at all or in the post-positionally, where they were usually solid... but around the rim it was just bad usually. Won't miss that about them.

Locks for bench rotation: Mills, Manu, Dedmon, Anderson. These guys need to bring energy in their own ways every night, for real... with a bit of break from Manu due to age I'd say. That group needs more defensive toughness, though, aside from Dedmon, they're pretty damn weak defensively... at least feels that way thinking about it.

And then the other spot, or, more like spot and a half, is up for grabs... or going to another player we'll bring in. Personally, I hope its Simmons getting the last spot, and LJC/Bertans battle it out for the 1/2 spot to mix in at the 4 with probably Kyle, even though i don't like Kyle as a 4 unless situational by the game's flow.
