Best Spurs Offseason Scenario

There have been some question marks, but I think with the right moves this team could give Golden State a run for their money for years to come. This is a deep draft. And the Warriors have no pick at all. We should use that to catch up to them.

1. Let Dedmon and Mills walk (and definitely Joel Anthony who has no business being here in the first place).

2. Trade Kyle Anderson to the Orlando Magic for their 33rd pick. Seems realistic as he was on their offseason drawing board that our prospect Pato Garino posted on the internet.

3. Draft OG Anunoby, Tony Bradley and Josh Hart. Anunoby is supposed to fall due to a knee injury that he had, nbadraft got him at 28th, Bradley at 36th and Hart at 49th. We should be able to trade up in the 2nd round by giving up Anderson.

4. Tell Pau to opt out and resign him for a longer deal that gets him about 10 million a year (3/30 seems realistic). There's no way we should be paying 16 million for a player coming off the bench who plays 20 min a game.

5. Sign George Hill for 16 million. I'd say sign him for 1 year + player option. We got a lot of cap space in 2018, so he can opt out and maybe get more, depending on his performance. He would definitely give us a hometown discount.

6. resign Lee & Simmons

we got bird rights for Simmons so we can go over the cap, we'd also still have the MLE or LLE for David Lee. I think he would definitely take that.

7. Sign Tiago Splitter and Kyle Korver for veteran minimum


the roster would look as following:

C: Splitter/Gasol/Bradley
PF: Aldridge/Lee/Bertans
SF: Leonard/Simmons/Anunoby
SG: Green/Korver/Hart
PG: Hill/Parker/Murray

D-League stashes: Forbes, Hanga?

The NBA added that you can stash 2 players in the D-League. I'd send Forbes down there, just to make this NBA roster as stacked as possible. I'm not sure if his salary would count against the cap either.

now let me explain:

Center:
There are plenty of bigs in this years draft with a Dedmon type of skillset and they have way more upside. Dedmon is just athletic and mobile enough to handle switches. He's a good rim protector, but neither a good passer nor does he have any offensive moves in the post. He also fouls too much, something most rookies do.
Bradley seems like a less athletic version of him, but he's been described as a Spurs type of player character wise and has high basketball IQ. He should be able to take on that role and at the same time save us some money, since Dedmon should get a nice offer from somebody (Stan van Gundy?). Bradley should still be the 3rd string center, for the starting spot I would bring back Splitter. Due to his injuries he should be available for the minimum, which means low risk, high reward scenario. He knows the system, is a good defender and rebounder, but most importantly: He's a roller that can pass. As we see in this Memphis series, our roll man has to be a good passer. When Kawhi gets double teamed, he passes to the roll man who then can kick out to shooters as he rolls to the basket. Now Dedmon can't do that. Lee can, but he's pretty bad on defense. Splitter would fix all of this while also knowing the system. Besides that he seems to have worked on his 3-point shot, he knocked down 2 of 6 for Philly (I know small sample size, but still). This could make him even more valuable. Now the downside is that he has chronic injuries, which gets me to

Power Forward: Keep that exactly how it is. Bertans should get more playing time, but I'd prefer to also keep Lee in case Splitter gets injured. That would give us the same rotation we have now in the playoffs. Pop could give Splitter a lot of rest in the regular season and slide Lee to C with LA at PF.

SF: Kawhi will be even better next season, that alone makes it scary. Simmons should have a break out year in his 3rd year playing, although he does need more playing time. Who I really want is OG Anunoby. He has been compared to Kawhi. Now imagine we have 2 Kawhi's down the stretch? That Warriors super team would get run over. That alone is a reason to take the risk and get him by giving up Kyle Anderson, who really isn't great at anything. Worst case scenario, Anunoby would be an athletic defender, which would still help us a lot. We need to have 3 great wing defenders in order to go small and counter Golden State.

SG: Korver would be another shooter. He can play the Marco Belinelli role off the bench. Something Pop said has been missing. He also fits our locker room and team culture. He should be cheap due to his age and I think he'd be a great fit here. Josh Hart is described as a Spurs type of player as well. Good character, classy guy. Him playing a couple of years in college should make it easier for him to adapt to the NBA. A lot of scouts compare him to be able to turn out like Malcolm Brogdon. He has improved every year in college, is a shooter, good defender that plays passing lanes and a high IQ player who can also serve as a secondary playmaker.

PG: George Hill is perfect to play with Kawhi. He can break down the defense and is a good spot up shooter, which is useful when Kawhi handles the ball. Besides that he knows the system and would help us get another leader on the team. What I really like about Hill is that he's a good defender and we can slide him to the 2 occassionally when Murray or TP play PG. This is a huge upgrade from a Mills/Parker line up that gets scored on with ease. He should also be willing to give us a little hometown discount and it would be great to have him playing alongside Kawhi after that trade in 2011. Parker can be our 6th/7th man together with Pau. Murray could play the 2 off the bench together with Parker or be the back up PG so Parker can get rest.


This would be a quality roster with vets, players in their prime, incredible defense and a lot of young talent while having great character guys with high Basketball IQ. We can run a lot of different line ups with this group, I'd say this team is even deeper and more versatile than the one we have right now, while also having more upside and improving on both ends.
Lamarcus should be profiting the most, since Hill can make things easier for him on offense and Splitter can make him preserve some energy on the defensive end. Danny Green should also be more effective playing alongside a PG who can break down the defense. If he struggles just insert Korver or slide Hill to SG and let Parker play PG.

Not a bad plan. I don't see OG Anunoby falling that far though, DX has him at 13 and I trust them far more than I trust draftnet.

Sadly I think Mills is gone, we just can't afford him and it doesn't make sense to have him Parker and Murray all on the roster. I'd like to us pickup another PG but I think the reality is we're going to go into next season with Parker and Murray as our PG rotation.

As for the other free agents I'd really like to see all of them back but I doubt it happens. I'd love to hang onto Dedmon but if the price isn't right I'm fine with him walking, ditto for Simmons, Lee on the other hand I could see coming back for the LLE or MLE and I'm fine with that but I also wouldn't be disappointed if he walks that would mean more minutes for Bertans which is a good thing in my books.

As for trading Anderson I really would rather keep him. He's still young and showed a lot of promise towards the end of the season. If Manu retires and Simmons walks (even if he doesn't) we'll need him badly.

Unless something drastic happens like an LMA trade I can't see much happening this offseason. I'm expecting Hanga and Milutinov to come over this summer and hopefully we add a solid player in the draft (I have my eyes on a few guys check out the draft thread).

The only real flashy move I can see us making is chasing a Manu replacement (ie a creative scorer) if he does choose to retire. Korver would be a great add but I'd like to see us chase someone a bit more creative instead. Tim Hardaway Jr would be perfect but we don't have the cash for that, Ian Clarke is a low key guy that could be a difference maker off the bench and he would be affordable.

Hanga and Milutinov I think are ready to move to San Antonio this year.
Hill would be an amazing addition especially if Mills leaves, but he probably will be too expensive to sign knowing Utah wants to keep him.
The conundrum remains Aldridge and if he can be convinced to play Center. To beat the Warriors you need wings that can guard and switch.
Green and Kawhi are excellent defenders. Hill would be an ideal addition as PG mostly because Parker is in decline long term and Mills isnt a plus defender.
Aldridge cant guard Green/Durant and switch to the perimeter where they would want to draw him out to so they can have an advantage.
Dedmon is decent at switching onto the perimeter. But if LMA decides he can bang down low all season long (where his advantages are maximised as a pick and pop floor spacer), and his disadvantages are minimised (not a top pick and roll defender after the switch) and the Spurs can get a mobile Power Forward that can switch onto the perimeter then Pop will shut the warriors down completely.

The most important for me is getting a power forward and sharing the center minutes between LMA and Pau, and secondly getting a good replacement for Mills if he is too expensive to keep, and unfortunately i think Hill will be too expensive as well.
Someone like Pj Tucker/Marcus Morris/Millsap types who can guard 3 and 4 and switch with Kawhi.
Hanga fits perfectly as a defeder off the bench at SF, and Milutinov becomes the 3rd center behind LMA and Pau.

I feel like Anderson is underappreciated. It's just ridiculous the standard that he's held to sometimes like he has to be an all star or something or he's not worth keeping, so in every plan of avery armchair GM fan, he's always the first to go. I tend to think Spurs like him and will keep him, but a trade would not be terrible for him if he can get playing time elsewhere so no matter what I wish him the best... he's in a contract season next year and I think he will be balling. I like the player, he's a very smart player who may not score a whole lot some times bc he's so unselfish.

I once thought Dedmon and Simmons were going to be expensive to keep, but with a lot of opportunities in the season, they both fizzled out and I think their prices are going to be reasonable enough that Spurs can afford to keep them if they want to. The question will probably be if the players themselves get too much elsewhere and it's time to part.

I agree on Mills, he's going to get paid and doesn't make much sense moving forward with a prospect as talented as Murray in the team.

I also agree with you in that maybe the Spurs go after someone more dynamic in the summer. It seems like they were grooming Simmons for that role, but he really didn't have a breakout season like most of us thought.

Also I had to point out, G.Hill is not going to sign in the Spurs for 16 mill, he's worth more in this NBA. He rejected an offer that was higher from that from the Jazz if I remember correctly. Splitter is extremely injury prone. If you sign him, he's likely not the starter. He should be a bench player... I would love a healthy Splitter but being injured continuously for going on 3 years now, if he's signed he's probably going to end up your 5 big likely.

I also seriously think Manu is retiring.. and moreover, he probably needs to at this point. What we are seeing in the postseason from him in terms of his struggles will be worse next year.
