Pau Gasol will Decline Player Option
Bit of a shocking move really and it's nice to see that he wants to stay with the team as well. This could make resigning everyone realistic or it could mean a real run at Paul.

Re: Pau Gasol will Decline Player Option
He can easily play until 40 yrs old like Dirk (barring injury of course)
I expect a nice cool 3yr/$24 or something like that. Or simply something still manageable like 3yr/$30
I still fully believe Simmons will be coming back

I don't know if I'd want to do 3 years but a two year 16-20 million dollar deal sounds about right.

Re: Pau Gasol will Decline Player Option
It has to be to clear space for a FA(s) signing. (note that LEE has declined his as well)
So if he's coming back, it's for an exemption. To make the money work for him (he's giving up $16.2 Million), that needs to be the MLE ($8.4 million) for a minimum of 2 years, and I would guess 4...
IF we decline all our cap holds, we are at $73.1 million in guaranteed salaries, and 8 players ( LMA, Kawhi, Parker, Green, Anderson, Murray, Bertans, Forbes). After cap holds, and a $102M salary cap, not quite enough for a full max for CP3 (starting at $35.7 M) (nor for Hayward, starting at $30.6 M)...
So, how much of a pick can we get for Danny Green? (and by the by, this would allow us to keep Simmon's cap hold. Also possibly Mills', but why?) Or are we actually willing to stretch Parker?

I really can`t see it happening. I`m still in the believe when I see it camp on CP3, it just doesn`t seem plausible on so many levels.
Gasol taking a discount does make it easier for us to retain all 3 of Mills, Simmons and Dedmon though.

Re: Pau Gasol will Decline Player Option
I doubt they are doing this to retain Dedmon and Mills...this is a nice surprise and it's with the purpose of a big move (CP3).
Something like a 2+1 player option for 6mill each year could be reasonable. If Pau is done after year 2...he will be the first guy opting out, or at least doing what Tim did last summer, opt in and retire...earning the money while putting his salary off the books.

When this account gets more "And1"s than posts written ...then my life will be complete. And maybe it will be the right time to hang it up. (Achieved on 2017-2018 season)...but still here.

Even though I think he's pretty useless at this point in his career he really did us a huge favor and deserves to be back just for doing this.

Totally agree. We dont need a traditional point guard. Kawhi handles the ball mostly in our offense. We need a big or a swing that can score consistently.

Re: Pau Gasol will Decline Player Option
why does the spurs need cp3? its like his the one thats begging to win a championship, not the spurs....
why does he need his starting salary to be +30m? why cant he sign for something lower with the spurs? starting around 20-25m, allowing the spurs to use whatever left over to fill the roster...

Re: Pau Gasol will Decline Player Option
I think Paul would help in numerous ways. In the first place, a stand-and-watch offense with Kawhi ISOing a majority of the time is not a winning offense. In the second place, we need someone who can get the most out of our other players, and that's exactly what a top-shelf point guard does; the fact that Paul is a great scorer and a solid shooter from that position is value added.
Finally, we need a good defender at the one to deal with Curry; even though he's mostly unstoppable, Paul is a better option than most for guarding him.
The downsides are his age and injury history, of course, so it would be a gamble. It's all probably moot anyhow, as he doesn't likely plan to leave 80 million bones on the table.

Trading for Chandler would have taken them over the cap. So I think they know they have some trades/moves left to do. *unless I'm wrong about the cap situation*. That trade for Chandler was possibly just a desperation attempt to get something for Simmons
