Re: 2021 SPURS OFF-SEASON ROSTER NEWS - CHANGES, RUMOURS, TRADES, SIGNINGS
What a whirlwind day. The three remaining vets we had are now on other teams.
Our best scorer and passer who was also the spearhead around whom our 2s-dominant game was S&T'd for need at experienced and expiring PFs and picks, adding height and balancing the roster - PFs playing PF, stretching the floor, but also can shift into other positions.
A SF-turned-PF who was our best 3 shooter in terms of efficiency who was a quality scorer but at times a bit ISO heavy was replaced by a FA signing who is younger, on a cheaper, short contract who shoots the 3 more efficiently and has terrific finishing at the rim numbers.
And our sharp-shooting, charge taking spirit leader is heading for a shot at a deep post-season run. We drafted a PG in the second round last season and a G in the first round this season making Bala Patty's role with us, at least as a player, smaller than he's ready for.
We wish them all the best, and turn now to the young guys who've been learning from all our vets the whole time we've also been trying to compete, who've been brought along incrementally to contribute more each year.
As they've contributed more, we've shifted to a more transition oriented game, but because our best player was a mid-ranger, we were still last in the league at 3s taken and made per game.
We've addressed issues of size up front, we've addressed issues of players at their natural positions but who are also versatile enough to play others, we've addressed the desperate need for outside shooting, and we've addressed a dearth at the bigs position.
So now after signing Aussie C Jock Landale, our roster looks like this:

Re: 2021 SPURS OFF-SEASON ROSTER NEWS - CHANGES, RUMOURS, TRADES, SIGNINGS
We need to be at 17 players by the start of the season.
Perhaps it's Aminu who gets released? He makes over $10M this season. That's a lot for a player who can't provide that value on the court. He's still listed as a 6'8" PF so perhaps a body on at the PF level in a pinch to see what he has left? Doesn't sound like a tenable situation.
Jeffries looks to have a $1.4M contract for this season and he's a G. Likely candidate?
Drew's contract gets guaranteed for $1.7M on 14-8-21 but hopefully we keep him because we have Jakob and Jock but have no idea how Zach's recovery is progressing.
Brian Wright said the league is a more perimeter oriented one, that we're going to get shooters. But he also said we want versatile players. Bryn is one of those things. Used properly, just coming off the bench to be a spark plug, Bryn and his career-high 45.2% from 3 this past season can be valuable.
Is this a case of having shooters at our disposal everywhere?
Or are we gearing up for something more...?

We are either going to look like geniuses getting Simmons with a third team involved or are tanking hard. My god.

More activity! Trade in progress. I wonder who or what we sent out?
Maybe we just absorb the contract and so we were given an extra pick for it? If so, that's now one 1st and three 2nds we're acquired. Very solid asset stockpiling.

Honestly, he IS the highest efficiency shooter we now have. IF USED PROPERLY, all he has to do is shoot from the arc. I think we forget that Bryn started because of injuries to DJ one year then Derrick the next. Derrick being the better passer made Bryn's off ball easier. He also made 42% from 3 that year so it somehow worked.
I do not expect him to start, but do expect him to have an insta-shot energy boost role from the bench.
Notice though that all the guys we signed can hit 3s and we got picks in trades. All these guys can't be traded. Who can be traded for that would do well surrounded by a bunch of shooters? Hmm...
I still think something is brewing behind the scenes. I just hope it's not too costly in sending too many of our young guys out. I'd rather more picks, within reason.

SA would be nearly perfect for Ben Simmons to expand as a player if they got him.. its a great match for where both parties are at right now.
Out of the limelight and big city.
Good culture and committed to getting better and fixing flaws. Chip Engelland should be able to get his shot to be respectable.
Demanding accountability and getting tougher mentally.
The team would immediately be his and no one else would be in scope.
Younger group to grow with.
International understanding and perspective for culture and the game...
Would be the Kawhi replacement Spurs nation is secretly looking for and desiring for.
Probably too good to be true, but would be just what this team needs.

Looks like we gave up the rights to Milutinov in that trade so at least we know where that stands.

Re: 2021 SPURS OFF-SEASON ROSTER NEWS - CHANGES, RUMOURS, TRADES, SIGNINGS
Wolves fan here. Wondering if you think the Spurs would have any interest in SG/SF Jarrett Culver, the former Texas Tech standout and former #6 overall pick in 2019 draft.
Culver has been pretty underwhelming with the Wolves, and would be fair to call him a bust, but it sounds like more of a culture problem then anything. And not that Culver is a bad kid, just sounds like he never assimilated in Minnesota and with the pandemic and ankle problem he had last season, he definitely hasn’t gotten a fair shake here in Minnesota.
I don’t think it’s confirmed that we are trying to move Culver. His older brother is actually on our summer league team this year. But I think Wolves fans are more eager to move on considering (a) we drafted Anthony Edwards who plays the same position and (b) we don’t have much cap space so if we do acquire a player, it will have to be through trade and the Wolves don’t have too many traceable assets.
I’ve heard it suggested from local media in Minnesota that they think Culver would be best served going to a Texas team where he can be closer to family and star somewhere new.
Hes making roughly $6m this year, and next year is a team option, so his career is certainly at a cross roads no matter who he plays for next year.
Looking at your roster, seems like you have a lot of cap space. From an admittedly-Wolves perspective, I wonder if there is a chance for a deal here. What makes it challenging is it’s hard to know how much Culver is worth at the moment. I could be convinced he’s only worth a future second round pick at most, or that he still commands a later first rounder at least.
There’s also the fact that the Wolves are in a weird spot in that we have our roster already practically set, but we know it’s not good enough because we are mostly just returning the same team as last year, which wasn’t good—though injuries are partly to blame for that.
Anyways, I guess I am posting all of this to see if you Spurs fans think their FO would be interested in Culver. At a minimum, he is a good wing defender at the NBA level right now. His offense is what’s lacking. From what I understand, he mostly ran the offense at Texas Tech, playing a more point forward role for the team. He was dominant in the mid-range, but was average-to-subpar from 3, which isn’t great because our team was hoping he could be a 3&D guy — again, another reason why he was a poor fit here.
I’m not sure what Wolves GM Gerson Rosas has been offered for Culver, if he has even had discussions about him at all, but is there anyone on your roster who you would consider trading for Culver? The salary wouldn’t even have to match since you are so far below the luxury.
Is Thaddeus Young seriously part of your plans? Do you think the Spurs FO would consider Culver and Juancho Hernangomez for Thad Young? Have heard you are maybe pursuing Markkanen, but if that doesn’t pan out, I wonder if Hernangomez would be a decent consolation prize. Like Markkanen, Juancho is not a great frontcourt defender, so he actually played better as a SF for us last year. He’s a great cutter and two seasons ago hit 40% from deep. He seems like a Pop player.
I’m not sure the Wolves would even want Thad Young. We trade for Taurean Prince who is a similar player and our biggest need is PF that can defend the rim, which Young cannot do. Maybe if we get that far into discussions, we could bring in a third team.

Spurs are an ideal trading partner due to their hoarding of guards and picks
Here’s an example
IF Dame wants out (highly doubtful) and Simmons is going
Sixers get Dame
Spurs get Simmons (Klutch)
Blazers get Murray (Klutch), Maxey (Klutch) plus picks from Sixers and Spurs

A trade like this seems reasonable. But the Sixers FO aren't looking for reasonable. The asking price they want for Simmons is laughable and no one is going to touch it.
