My greatest fear is having to eventually extend Fox to a number which is simply not justifiable. I can understand swapping out Vassell and other contracts for him but if we have to pay him $60m per year, after this year, that is going to put a significant constraint on the ability of the Spurs to compete for a championship.
In fact, I am in the camp of trade for Fox and let him walk after he expires. That's why I don't want to offer the house for him. The deal is either Castle, Keldon, filler + one first rounder or Vasell, 3 first rounders.
Hey welcome back! Hope you're feeling better.
I think we've considered all that. Everything flows from paying Wemby what will surely be a supermax when the time comes.
We have been looking for a more win now PG for a while so we are willing to pay. Consider that several of our own contracts are and will be expiring year to year. Consider that a Fox five year contract, even at max, is 1. Not a super max for which he is not eligible 2. Will expire soon after Wemby's supermax kicks in 3. The cap is only projected to increase and 4. We have to think in terms of percentage of cap space. 35% and 30% of the cap is one thing, but second apron is I think 130% of the cap so in fact there's still lots of room left to improve the roster. And improve we must. I agree that Fox isn't the lone push over edge piece. But he is a significant two-way piece we have shown interest in, and now that the interest is clearly mutual, it is a unique position to be able to acquire a player of his caliber that actually does meet Wemby's timeline because he is growing at such a rapid pace.
I'm on board so long as Castle stays and we don't overpay with picks, especially the unprotected Atl ones.
