Surprised his agent agreed to that.

He should be playing now but I guess he gave us more chances to win so we sat him.

It also had to do with his two-way contract in which there's a cap as to how many games he plays for the big club.

Now that we converted it to a guaranteed one, he can come up and we sign someone else with the other two-way.

Agree that it's a great deal for both sides.

I like him as a player but his skillset isn't exactly what teams are begging for nowadays. He could stick as an end of the bench or specialty player.

His agents probably didn't have much choice. No one else in the league was going to sign him for anything but league minimum.

He went from almost out of the league to 10.2 million. I'd take it. He will be 25-26 years old with a chance for another contract if he improves.

The 4 years length was the surprise.

I thought he would have backed himself to play into a better contract within the next 2 years.

Not chump change but I reckon he could have got more from what I've seen of him.

Good read:

Bassey had played well enough for the Spurs’ G League affiliate in Austin to be invited to participate in the “Next Up” game as part of this weekend’s All-Star festivities in Salt Lake City.

By signing his new NBA contract before the All-Star break instead of waiting until after, Bassey was forced to surrender his spot in the de facto G League All-Star game.

Given the choice, Bassey opted to take the NBA money now — and take the next week off.

“I just decided to get it done,” Bassey said. “At this point, I just wanted to get it going. Just let my mind have piece that I am with the team.”

For intents and purposes, the Spurs front office has essentially retroactively manufactured an extra pick in last June’s draft.

Had Bassey stayed another year at Western Kentucky, he would have been part of the 2022 draft class.

The contract the Spurs awarded him is structured in much the same manner as a standard NBA rookie-scale deal — front-loaded with guaranteed

The Spurs have claimed recently waived Philadelphia 76ers guard Julian Champagnie to fill their open two-way slot, the team announced Thursday.

The slot opened up earlier this week when the Spurs converted center Charles Bassey's two-way deal to a standard NBA contract.

The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Champagnie joined Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent last summer. As a junior last season with St. John's, he averaged 19.6 points with 6.6 rebounds and 2.0 assist while shooting just 41 percent (33.7 percent from 3-point range).

In 18 G League games, the 21-year-old Brooklyn native averaged 28.7 minutes, 14.3 points on 41.9 percent shooting (35.2 percent from beyond the arc), 5.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

And in sad Spurs Family news, original Spurs owner, Red McCombs has passed away.

We wouldn't have the Spurs in SA without him.

He actually comes from Spur, Texas. It was meant to be.

Thank you, Red, for your unwavering commitment and effort. Grace to his family and friends. May his memory be a blessing.

Wow didn't see this coming. I was just thinking we hadn't seen Roby in a while when seeing his name on the most recent injury list.

I wonder whether he wanted more of a shot to play and that's fair. We went from not having enough true modern PFs to having a glut with Sochan, Diop, Barlow.

Roby seems so Spursy on paper and he is very much so off court but on it at times he looked like he was trying to do too much, perhaps in an effort to expand his game, stand out. But over-dribbling full court, fancy finish attempts, with some good shot mechanics that did not translate to efficiency. In fairness it is difficult to come in cold and get your shot off well but that's the job.

It got too congested with similar-sized multi-tooled players at the same position. And with who knows when Birch being able to return, we get some size with a younger guy at the bigs position:

Mamu is an interesting player. He definitely has some legit point forward skills. Hes also really lacking in some other things (vertical athleticism, physicality). Could be a fun guy

He said we worked him out pre-draft so there's at least a bit of familiarity. There's no pressure on him and it's a great opportunity so hopefully it works out for both sides. Nice to see him embracing it. So long as he hustles, that alone can make up for other deficiencies.

Damn. Not surprising now but still feel bad for Charles. He worked hard to earn a guaranteed contract. Hopefully he recovers fully for the start of next season.
