Ginobili close signing to 3 year 40 million extension

There are still a couple of significant issues to be resolved within the next 24 to 48 hours, but the two sides have established the framework of the extension – which could be a worth a total of up to $40 million over the three years – and think the deal could be completed by the end of the week. Ginobili’s agent, Herb Rudoy, is expected to meet with Spurs officials after the team returns from Phoenix Thursday morning.
Spurs chairman Peter Holt made it clear he wanted to re-sign Ginobili, even though the small-market team is expected to pay a luxury tax of about $10 million this season.
More than I wanted to pay, but a fair price.

Manu has all the leverage right now and I'm not surprised. I think even Manu knows that the Spurs can't afford to let Manu go unless they intend on doing a complete rebuild. Given what has happened this month with us playing well, no way the FO is gonna do that and therefore Manu has the leverage. It's a bit more expensive than I would like but given that he sacrificed in his previous contract, it's only right to give him more this time. If we get it done, I'd be happy.

Glad this is getting done. This was becoming a bit of a distraction. Now we can just focus on the rest of the season and the playoffs.

Way to go Spurs and way to go Manu! I like the fact its only a 3 yr deal so nothing terribly long when Manu is really long in the tooth. The guy has been playing amazing of late and deserves every penny. I can't wait for the playoffs to begin.

Time for Manu to spring for some hair plugs. He should go to the same guy that Steve Nash used.

I am happy about it... Who could we have gotten if he left in the offseason and with only the MLE to play with.

i think this is overpaid for 33 years old 6th man. If this deal come true spurs cannot close play-offs next five years. He's just well in last mount, how about next season? Remember Hedo.

He was underpaid for year ... and yeah... if he left who do we replace him with?

Wait until the offseason, you'll see talents less that Manu getting ridiculous deals after Bron, Wade, Bosh decide what they're doing.
The age thing is potentially an issue, but Nash is playing at a very high level and he's 35.

I don't understand what Jamal is saying at all.
Does he think we lock up Manu for 40 mil this year? Or does he think we have 40 mil of capspace? Or is it something else? I have no idea what this guy is saying.
How the hell do we get a lot of promising talent even if it's for 2 million or 200 million by letting Manu go? It's not like we have a 80 draft picks or 50 MLEs to play with. No matter what we do with Manu, our only way to add talent is the same for any year. 1 MLE, 1 LLE, and Draft Picks. Manu's deal doesn't effect any of that.

Yeah, it's confusing. I think he's suggesting that we kill any chances we have of bringing over FA's because of Manu's deal, or maybe I'm reading it wrong.

I think this deal will have a 'trickle down' effect for the franchise. It shows that the Spurs are a players franchise and are more than willing to reward players for years of service. They did something similar with D-Rob's last contract IIRC.

I'm always a bit wary of guys being paid for past performance. Ben Wallace got that monster deal from the Bulls based on what he did a few seasons prior. There was no way he was going to replicate that level of play in Chicago, and of course he was mediocre in his time there.
But Gino has been "underpaid" (hate to use that term for dudes that get paid millions to bounce a ball) for years and deserves a fat contract. He's my all-time favorite Spur and has been a joy to watch for all these years.

I will agree with the situation in Chicago with Ben Wallace. Difference is, I think Ben's numbers was expected to drop off as the years go by but not as steep as it was. Had Ben stayed in Detroit, I think his numbers will decline steadily instead of just drop like crazy. Changing teams can do that especially for an older guy. They're gonna need time to adjust and when you're old, you don't really have "time" on your side.

Yeah. That was more Chicago's mistake than anything else. They paid for the 2006 version of Wallace and thought they were getting the 2003 version.
