Wow, that seems like a real surprise, especially considering how pedestrian his play was last season.

I haven't had time to look into it yet, anyone know how that affects our cap situation?

Edit: Just looked into it. Not good. Crap. Definitely would have been better off with his expiring

Newbie talking, LOL. If Jefferson didn't opt out, I can imagine Spurs accepting to send a player like Blair with Jefferson just to get rid of his contract.

One idea floated by someone was that RJ opted out of the deal to give the Spurs more room to bring Splitter over in return for signing a multi year deal. It would make more sense for him opting out. Otherwise, he's likely to leave a lot of money on the table.

Crazy, I'm really suprised he left 15 million on the table just for the possibility of a long term deal. With the way he played last season I can't see getting anything more 7 million a season.

I'm the newbie? Maybe by post count but ask around what an expiring contract means in the NBA, ESPECIALLY the year before a salary-based lockout. Seriously, ask around. Make some calls. I'll wait. Daryl Morey managed to turn Tmac's 20 million expiring contract into a former first round pick (Jordan Hill, 8th I think) and another future Knick pick just for taking on Jeffries. Another example? Although it was a stupid trade, don't forget Pau went to the Laker's for Kwame's expiring. I can go on if you like

Expiring contracts have value. Watch out next time you call out a newb

Whether you want the expiring contract or not depends entirely on what your motivations are. If the primary objective is to improve the talent of a team then yes a huge expiring is attractive at the trade deadline. However, if finances and the luxury tax are a concern, then getting rid of Jefferson's overpriced contract now is a benefit for the Spurs.

The way the NBA works now the financial aspect of contracts and trades is just as important as the talent involved.

Q: Doesn't this take the Spurs less than $2m UNDER the projected cap, thereby taking the MLE off the table, thereby leaving less than $2m available to sign Splitter?

Not trolling, I may well be incorrect, just wanted to see if I had my math right and figured you'd all know best.

Spurs get to choose whether they want the MLE or cap space, no?

I think he felt he didnt fit in the Spurs system.
Scared of a lockout so he's hoping to get a three+ year deal.
Wants to play for a contender.
