Jefferson return could be imminent,

5 years for 45 million, with the last year non-guaranteed looks like a win-win for all parties.

Holt (as he saves roughly 20 million in luxury tax relief), Jefferson as he gets a fair long-term contract, and the Spurs don't lose any ground from a talent stand-point and don't have to use scotch tape (LLE) to fix the apparent huge gap at the small-forward position.

Eh... why give so much money to someone who doesn't fit with the team.

Personally, I am ok with signing someone at the LLE or even the min at the small forward position and letting Jefferson walk.

We could also sign and trade him to a team with cap space and get a big exception but it would mean that alot of teams struck out on the FA goals in the summer.

Honestly, my best guess is this.

The Spurs need to cut down on this year's salary. We were so far over the tax and that's not even counting Splitter's signing and filling the rest of the roster yet. So the Spurs' best option to do this is by making Jefferson opt out of his contract.

Obviously, to entice Jefferson so he opts out, the Spurs need to offer a new deal in place. Let's say for example, the Spurs offer 4 year 30 million. Basically, Jefferson is getting a 3 year 15 mil extension. They give this to Jefferson with the saying that if he can get a better deal elsewhere, then you can go. If not, this offer will be on the table for you no matter what in return for you opting out of your contract.

This is the only way both parties look somewhat smart.

I personally don't believe that the Spurs are just so lucky for having an extremely dumb Jefferson.
