Shaq wants to play for Spurs

Post#1 » by Magz50 » Thu Jul 8, 2010 1:21 am

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/07/07/sour ... ns/?synd=1

"ORLANDO, Fla. -- Shaquille O'Neal's first choice is to join the San Antonio Spurs for one final run at a fifth NBA title, and he wants to play two more seasons before retiring, a source told FanHouse on Wednesday."

Like i said in the main forum, I have always hated Shaq, and it would pain me greatly to have to support him. However, we DO need depth at center and having the big guy would b a huge upgrade over Bonner. Not sure what to think really? Can we even acquire him without giving him our mid level which it looks like he wants? Will that not make it impossible to bring over Splitter? Or would we be able to use the remaining cap space we got from RJ leaving?

I think he's looking for a bad FT% team so as not to suffer that much at the end of his carrear.

I see Shaq as a good addition if it is for the BAE, using the MLE in Splitter and of course bringing back RJ or getting Matt Barnes..

Shaq is still a productive Center even thou he's not able to play big minutes anymore. Atleast he's good for 25 minutes and still productive enough if we go to him in the low post.

Problem is, it says in the article that he's looking for MLE. And he should. That's likely to be his value in this summer's FA. If I have to make the choice between Splitter or Shaq, I'll choose Splitter. So unless Shaq is willing to take the BAE, I hope he doesn't come here.

Shaq would be a great pick up for the Spurs. We would get more media coverage and sell more tickets. He can clog up the min and still give a productive 20-24 mins a game. Pop uses his vets wisely and would make sure he is fresh for the playoff run.

If we are talking about competing with LA then Shaq is a better short term fit then Splitter. With the cap being higher can we afford to sign them both?

Good for him, but I want nothing to do with him. I don't think his ego could handle backing up Splitter.

He would start play limited mins plus Splitter still needs to learn the NBA game and spurs rotation.

He'd be a good addition... Why not?

"He wants to sign a two-year deal,'' the source said about O'Neal, who made $21 million last season with Cleveland. "And then the second year will be a farewell tour. He can tell a team that you would sell out all 41 games (that season).''

Problem with this quote is that I don't think Shaq's farewell tour will bring anyone to come out and watch him. There's nothing exciting about Shaq's game anymore that's worth watching and by his 2nd year, he'd be more like a 18 minutes player.

I don't mind Shaq, but I question if we should use our MLE with Splitter while also having Duncan, Blair, McDyess, and even possibly Matt Bonner, and then also use our BAE for Shaq (assuming that's what he comes here for) while still having a huge problem at SF with or without Richard Jefferson.

No Shaq. He's done and doesn't make us a better team.

Hard to believe Shaq isn't better than Dice, Blair, or Bonner.

Better is one thing, fitting in is something else entirely.

Shaq should fit in offensively...

It's on defense that will be the problem. We have enough trouble with Smallball lineups as it is. What's gonna happen with Shaq now? For BAE or veteran minimum, if project Shaq fails miserably, there's nothing to lose. But if we're spending things like the MLE and Shaq ends up unable to get on the court long enough because of the defense, then we just wasted another year of Duncan.

I doubt Shaq would play here for the BAE and honestly why should he. He's an aging superstar "even if in name recognition alone" but will sell tix and bring a buzz to the town.

Even in his old age signing Shaq would be the biggest free agent we ever acquired.

I hated Deon until he wore a star on his helmet. I could get used to Shaq in the middle.

He will never sign here for less than the MLE....and thankfully we are going to use that on Splitter.

Shaq is not the answer. Where do you think he ends up? Mavs could possibly use him.

Shaq is the most logical place for him IMO. They need his size and low post scoring especially now that Jermaine O'neal decide to go to Boston.

Gery Woelfel: Shaq to Spurs rumor heating up. Would fit in nicely with their system

Got it from twitter. Don't even make sense at all. After the Bonner signing, it's doubtful the Spurs spend any money on yet another bigman.

Would mean more if the guy twitting was from somewhere other than Racine Wisconsin.

If that was true, I think you'll be reading Bonner sign and trades instead of Spurs resign Bonner. I really hate that move. I'm very sure that Bonner will continue to get minutes next season and that can't be good. I really expect Blair or Splitter to get plenty of minutes. I definitely don't want Bonner being in the way of that.
