RJ to resign today

Post#1 » by Magz50 » Wed Jul 21, 2010 1:18 pm

"Eyebrows all over the NBA convulsed upward on June 30 when forward Richard Jefferson announced he had chosen to exercise the opt-out clause in the final season of his contract with the Spurs.

Passing on $15.2 million, guaranteed, will cause that sort of reaction.

After testing the waters of free agency, Jefferson will at last sign a new deal with the Spurs today that will keep him in silver and black for at least three more seasons — and eventually pay him more than he left behind — a league source said Tuesday."

Phew...at least we have a starting calibre SF now.

Well we now have a starting SF, hopefully RJ can build on what did last season and give us some good minutes at SF.

Jefferson to Re-sign
Reigning Black

According to Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News, Richard Jefferson should be back in San Antonio prepping to sign a new long-term contract with the Spurs on Wednesday.

Jefferson -- a 6-7 small forward and 9-year veteran of the NBA -- left more than a few scratching their heads with his decision to opt out of a final year that would've guaranteed him $15.2 million. But seeking to avoid the uncertainty of free-agency in a post-CBA renegotiation, Jefferson elected for long-term security -- the thinking to give a little now to recoup much more later.

But in one of the stranger free-agent markets in a long time -- one where Johan Petro essentially equals Tiago Splitter and a restricted free-agent in Rudy Gay gets a max contract without creating leverage -- Jefferson found himself standing without a chair when the music had all but stopped.

Terms of the contract have yet to be ascertained but it would be a fair assumption to think that Jefferson's yearly salary will be cut in half -- unlike Rudy Gay, Jefferson was allowed to test his market-value and create whatever leverage he could, only there was no leverage to be found. His stock had never fallen further. The Spurs will gain some much-needed breathing room with regards to the luxury-tax line and for the third time this offseason, they'll have acquired the most talented player available for the role -- Splitter and Bonner preceding.

According to timvp of SpursTalk:

Heard from a good source that Richard Jefferson's contract is a four-year, $40 million deal. I'm trying to get a second source to confirm. Don't take this info to the bank but it should be legit . . .

Hoping the source was mistaken or the Spurs have a sizeable team option in the fourth year -- this would seem to indicate the Spurs had an agreement in place with Jefferson -- at least put their offer on the table -- prior to him exploring free-agency.

That would be a terrible deal knowing no one wants Jefferson for 10 mil per.

30M over 5 years is fair. But if its 40M over 4 years thats the worst signing of the summer and thats saying a lot.

Sources tells TNT's David Aldridge that forward Richard Jefferson's new contract with the San Antonio Spurs, officially announced on Wednesday, is for four years and $38.8 million, with a player option for the final season at a little more than $11 million.

5 for 30 is less than the MLE. When RJ opted out he and the Spurs were talking about a deal between 3 and 30 and 5 and 45 and this seems to be right in the middle. Go see Drew Gooden if your worried about the worst signing of the off season.

geeze no way RJ is worth 38.8 mil for 4 yrs. This was obvious a pre arranged deal the Spurs made. I would almost rather have RJ expire for 15 mil.

Agreed. His 15 million dollar expiring would have actually been worth something, now we just have him and his god awful contract. RJ is not worth that kind of money, not even close to that kind of money.

Did Spurs FO actually watch RJ play last season?! He was horrible! Almost $10M per and we're locked in for 4 more years of him...unbelievable.

Not trying to troll, but just curious what the front office was thinking on this deal.

RJ has been in decline for 3 years and had his worst year last year and never fit in with you guys even defensively.

Of all the deals this offseason, this is up there as one of the worst.

Not the best transaction this off season but not the worse. almost 10 mil per is over paying for sure but Spurs had few options. You have to look at the big picture. Spurs were going to pay him 15.2 mil and upward of 23mil with luxury tax.

If you consider that plus no replacement out there on the market then its not so bad a deal. Having said that I would have been happier with 30-32 mil for 4 yrs.

That helps to put the deal in perspective, thanks

Well after this deal, I really think this is a deal that has already been put on the table when he opts out. The Spurs gain a lot by Jefferson opting out and Jefferson has to be incredibly stupid to opt out without having an offer on the table like that.

If you judge the signing and the opt out seperately, then ofcourse the Spurs now look stupid again. Forget 4 year 40 mil, the Spurs could give him 5 year 35 mil and who's gonna even match that offer?

Spurs get below the tax, gives us flexibility to sign Splitter, and essentially give Jefferson a 3 year 25 mil extension.

Jefferson gets to test the market, and basically gets an extension that is worth above the MLE.

It's a win-win deal.

I wouldn't say its a win for us. 4 years 38 million is way too much for RJ, there was literally no intrest in RJ from other teams. We overpaid for a declining scorer who relies too heavily on his athleticism and in couple years this deal is gonna look really bad.
