Should Duncan Have Been An All-Star?

Just wandered over from the Raps forum...

I'd like to get a consensus from Spurs fans about TD's season...

Should he have been an all-star this year?

He's averaging 13.5 PPG and 9.3 boards...

For more than a decade we've seen the very best that Duncan has to offer in these mid-season exhibitions...and clearly he is no longer at his best...

With no vested interest in either the Spurs or the Wolves...I'm shocked that he was selected ahead of Kevin Love who's averaging 21 and 15.5

Your thoughts...

Yes, he's the best player in the NBA

Nope, TD got in based on rep only. His numbers are not all star caliber IMO. Aldridge or Love deserve the spot over him at this point.

TD obviously got in based on reputation IMO. Coaches just respect him too much for stepping back and allowing Manu/Parker to take on bigger role.

If the Spurs deserve two guys on the ASG regardless of positions, it's got to be Manu and Parker. Parker definitely deserve it more than Duncan.

I think Duncan deep down doesn't want to go. Same for Manu. These guys have been there already and would probably prefer rest and being with their families. Not sure about Parker since he needs to be occupied these days. He doesn't have Eva to come home to.

Don't think Manu feels that way. Maybe Duncan since he's chosen all the time. But Manu? He only made it once in 2005 right? I see no reason why he wouldn't be honored or want to be selected.

Based on this season he shouldn't be in ahead of Love.

But when the playoffs start I'd rather have Duncan on my team than Love.

Politics is why Duncan made it.

BS. Aldridge and Love (and several other players probably) deserved a spot over TD, but let's not bring politics into it. It's simply the respect TD has that landed him a spot. Hell, I'd rather see any of those guys over TD anyway. I don't watch the AS game, it's boring and I'm not 14 anymore, but I know I'd rather see a young guy like Love or Aldridge make it, I think it would mean more for them and the fans of the respective teams for those guys to get in.

Best PF ever, he deserves to play every bb game that he wants to..

For individual stats, no. For team stats yes. For rep, DAMN!

You can't have only 1 player at the ASG if you are a 42-8 team...Even 2 is quite short..

The all-star game should not be about rewarding good players on great teams...

And I really don't think the majority of fans care about a team's record...

We just want to see the best players go at it

I agree, team record should have no bearing on AS game selection. Love is an All Star, no doubt in my mind. He's averaging 20-16, that's unheard of since the days of Moses Malone. Of course he should be an AS.

this thread is fkn stupid let alone post from spurs fans

go watch the games where he is forced to play big minutes to win us games, those are the games you look at, not the games where he plays 28mins and no action in the 4th quarter cause its a blowout win...

tim duncan is just coasting atm, he prove all you doubters wrong when the playoffs come around.

kevin love and blake griffin has no business being on the AS teams, are they good players? if they are good players how about backing up those monster stats with team wins? there are plenty of stat stuffers out there in the league.

You're totally right. But the ASG is rewarded for outstanding play from the beginning of the season until today. Tim Duncan has been coasting and even if he go on to average 35 points and 15 rebounds in the playoffs, it doesn't change the fact that he's not playing allstar caliber basketball for the first half of the season.

I do think Lamarcus Aldridge deserve to be in the game replacing Duncan. I don't agree with the Love selection. But I also agree that the Spurs should have 2 representative. I just think it should be Parker and Manu. Duncan is arguably the 3rd best player on this team so far this season.

What TD might do in the postseason -- ie. the future -- has no bearing on whether he should be an all star now. We know what he can in the playoffs. But there is no denying that Love and Aldridge deserve the spot over TD. Call their stats empty if you want, the fact is both those guys are having better seasons than TD. I know who I'd rather have on my team, of course it's TD, but for AS selection, TD really should not have made the cut.

As mentioned, Parker deserved it over him.

All Star games are popularity contests and a chance to see the best individual talent on the floor at one time. Team record should not influence how the players are selected. Team record should only be considered when determining MVP or All-NBA team selection. Those are accolades that matter. The All Star game really doesn't mean that much.

I do feel winning should matter. Which is why I think Duncan, Love, and Griffin IMO should be replaced with Aldridge, Nash, and Parker. But i really thought Aldridge and Nash got snubbed. I don't see how what Love is doing for the 2nd worst team in the league is better than what Nash is doing with that awful team right now. It's not like Nash is having a down season either.

Well Nash and Aldridge's respective teams are barely .500, so they're hardly having a big influence. And LMFAO at Griffin being replaced. The dude is absolutely an all star.

Won't deny Griffin selection because of the games I watch, Griffin is simply amazing. But again, I thought records should matter and that's the only reason I would leave off Griffin.

I personally just think that Duncan doesn't deserve the spot and Parker is the bigger contributor this year. If Spurs deserve two guys, it's Manu and Parker.

And then I think Aldridge deserve to be an allstar. Portland is in the playoffs without Oden, Roy, and Camby and they wouldn't be in that position if not for Aldridge. I think of the 6 guys I mention, I would say Aldridge deserve it most.

As far as the Nash selection, I look at Love doing what he does for a 11-39 team. Nash is putting up stats like last year for a 23-25 team. I would say there's a major difference between 11-39 and 23-25.

If I had to choose and say Spurs get just one all-star, I'd probably change my selection to Griffin, Aldridge, and Nash. Parker and Duncan only deserve to be in the all-star game because of the incredible record. If we were tied for 2nd place with a more modest 35-16 (LA's record) instead of 42-8, I think you'll only see Manu getting selected.

Again, I'll make the point that the majority of fans couldn't care less about a team's record...

We just want to see the best players go at it

After all, the all-star game is an exhibition for the fans, right?
