Possible free agents targets this summer

Post#1 » by Nolan » Sat May 21, 2011 5:26 pm

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a topic dedicated to this topic since there's been a ton of discussion around it.

Here's ESPN's breakdown of who's going to be available this summer:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=FreeAgents-11-12

Some of the guys i'm interested in are: Grant Hill, Kenyon Martin, Caron Butler, Tayshaun Prince, Chuck Hayes, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Samuel Dalembert.

Who do you guys want?

Depends on what is available to us. Assuming the CBA stays the same and that we have the MLE to use, then:

Tayshawn Prince. Has a great size at 6'9'' and able to play small ball PF, plays defense, can post up, pass, and shoot the 3. With Manu and Parker, we don't really need another slasher out there at the SF position. Probably the biggest reason why RJ doesn't slash to the basket anymore. But he's already 30.

Grant Hill. A huge fan of Grant Hill, but other than the defense, doesn't really fit with us. Doesn't have 3 point range and is way too old.

Mbah A Moute. Great size, can play smallball PF, plays defense, no shooting whatsoever, but has youth on his side.

Not a fan of Caron Butler. Doesn't have 3 point range, can't recall him to be much of a defensive player. Offensively, I think he's a player that we have to run a play for a whole lot for him to be productive. I don't think we can do that with all 3 of our perimeter guys, not forgetting Duncan. Just don't see how he fit here.

The big guys, Kenyon Martin, Don't like him. We need size. He's only 6'9''. Doesn't provide shotblocking. Doesn't stretch the floor. Injury proned.

I like Chuck Hayes, but as good as Chuck is defensively, I don't think he'll completely shutdown Zach Randolph. And a defensive addition like Hayes, Martin, or Dalembert doesn't solve our low post issue. Defensively, I just can't imagine those 3 guys making much of a difference if we had them instead of McDyess. Because that's what we essentially are doing here. We lose Dice, but we replace him with one of those bigs. Does that trade makes us beat the crap out of Memphis? I don't see it.

More than the lack of size to defend Gasol and Zach (Most teams don't have that size anyways), my bigger worry was the lack of production/defense from the SF position and low post offense.

Tayshaun Prince and Josh Howard as long as we figure a way of shipping Jefferson out (I'm only listing players I realistically believe we could sign, of course I'd like Caron Butler for example, I just don't see it happening). Josh Howard's value is probably at an all-time low following his injuries in Washington but if he can stay healthy he is a great all-around player. And I love Prince and think he will be a nice fit here and could even play some 4 in a small-ball lineup apart from his primary position. Basically Prince would do the things we ask of Jefferson much much better...

As co says above, a lot will depend on what happens with the new CBA when labor negotiations are finalized.

IMO, our biggest needs are a dependable big that can rebound and play some D and a 3 that can spread the floor and give us some athleticism.

Hill is a great player for his age, mileage and injury history but he doesn't fit what we do and is as old as dirt. We need to avoid aged players like the plague. Prince would be the best fit for us, and as batmana says J Howard may be picked up on the cheap because of injury concerns and the fact that he's an afterthought in the NBA at present.

How about Nene? I assume a lot of teams will throw big money at him - the Heat I know will be after him in a big bad way - so he's probably out of our price range. He would be perfect next to TD though.

Battier would be good, at the right price. He's turning 33 though, but he's about as close to a Bowen type left in the league and would fit right in for us. If he can be had for a good price, I say let's get him and give him the starting 3 spot.

I'd love to get Nene, he'd be a perfect fit for this team. But I think he'll be out of our price range. Unless we can work out a sign and trade with Denver.

Our best trade asset is Parker. Blair would have some value, he's a cheap contract and he's a solid player when utilized correctly. RJ would get us something, exactly what I'm not sure. Even with his restructured contract he's still tough to move.

But if we go off what Pop said when we got eliminated, there won't be much change to the core of this team for next season.
