Davis Bertans Selected With the 42nd Pick

Don't really know too much about him. He's a 6-10 small forward out of Latvia who apparently can really shoot the ball. Looks like a draft and stash pick considering he's only 18.

Anyone know anything more about him?

Some said he was one of the best shooters in draft, but he lacks experience, has no low post moves what so ever from what i heard. Average speed, need to work on defense and just fill his frame up. Down to earth kid, really love his attitude from i have seen, has quite excellent english for his age.

Does he look like a SF or is his future at PF?

he will be playing in U-19 euro championship next week, so there will be some more stats and video of him. He even refused to go over to US, to do private workouts because, he wants to win the tournament badly, so he only did the one workout in Treviso, and from what i read, it was one of the best workouts there...

I read the stuff about his workout and a lot people had a lot of good things to say about him. I'll have to watch U-19's and see what we got in Bertans.

Gallinari with minus creative and minus penetration.

Such a shooter.

But he can grow in that way, he has fundamentals.

So Gallinari..

What would the Spurs do with this kid? Bring him now and develop his skills maybe in the d-league or wait for him a couple of years? How is his buyout??
The good thing about Bertans is that he was supposed to be a 1st round pick, so being the 42nd pick is kind of a lie..He is one of the youngest players..

Galinary without creativity, penetration, and BULK, is Steve Novak...

I've read nothing that suggest he's more than a shooter offensively and that he doesn't know defense. Oh, and he's way too skinny and needs to add weight to his frame.

He is 18 and from North of Europe - did you expect him to be a body builder? He is quicker and more athletic than anyone expected. Don't know about his defence but he won Slovenian league slam-dunk contest and can shoot threes... at 18 it is not a bad start.

Btw, that championshis will be World not Europe U19 - so we might see him against USA as well. He just scored 30 points in an excebition match before the tournament against Russia which took 2nd place in European U18 championships a year ago. In other words, if he hadn't agreement with Olimpia he might have gone a lot higher than 42. Spurs got a steal again.

I know boxscores don't tell the whole story, but those boxscores didn't really get my hopes up.

For a guy who is the tallest player on the game (team and opponent), he doesn't rebound the ball nearly enough and he shoots the 3 way too much. And I would expect that if he is a highflyer like you said, he'd atleast block shots or something. He's the tallest guy on the floor for godsakes and againts that Chinese team, Bertans' team has 8 guys who are taller than the tallest Chinese player. That's a little disappointing.

And i just knew that he plays Center on that team. Obviously his future in the NBA is a SF/PF, but let's hope he improves a lot. For a shooter in a weak league, he needs to shoot better. He needs to bulk up. He needs to improve (or perhaps LEARN) ballhandling/slashing ability if he's gonna be a Gallinari type.

Sign "Center" is an error - he plays as SF also on the national team; He is shooting horribly at the moment, but on the bright side Australians were the unofficial world champions of U-18 a year ago.

well u-19 tournament is prety much over, only the finals left. Bertans had some really bad shooting games, and his 3pt% was of badly, he was just launching 3's and could not hit anything. Frankly the whole national team was looking funky. He did play SF/PF for team. He was averaging 15.3 PPG (46.7%) but yeah 3pt shooting was only at 26.7%, not his best games for sure. To compare to best SF in tournament Jeremy Lamb from US, Lamb had 16.2 PPG (45.8%) 3pt was low as well for him 28.9%.
Also as expected Valanciunas was by far the best player in tournament with 21.4 PPG and 14.6 RPG.

Valanciunas was flat out amazing all tourney long.

I watched a bit of Bertans, wasn't overly impressed but he shoot was off all tourney and the Latvian team played pretty badly too.

Bertrans plays for my team Union Olimpija so I thought to give you some info on him. As said in this thread he won Slovenian dunk competition. That was the first time I saw him. Althogh competition in our slam dunk is average at best, his athleticism really suprised me. He has good springs in his legs and is fluid in motion.

He didn't play much initially as one of Slovenian prospects played the sam position and was given more playing time as he is also more developed than Bertrans. But then he got injured and Bertrans got more and more playing time, playing some crucial minutes in important games. He was agressive in those games and looked like he belonged on the court. Although he didn't really have any statistical achivements he showed why he is such a prospect. His 3pt shoot is his only part of the game that translates on a senior level. He is far from being able to contribiute on an NBA level at least 2 years away. He is also 2 years younger than Vesely. And given the good oportunity to develop like Vesely had he could be even better prospect tha Jan. He will in my opinion, although our choach is not as good as Vujosevic Veselys coach, but he is decent enough and our club has a good history of developing NBA players (Jasikevicius, Jiri Welsch, Marko Milič, Vladimir Stepania, Rasho, bostjan Nachbar, Beno Udrih, Goran Dragić, Primoz Brezec)

In general I think Bertrans is more athletic than Gallinari and Novak ect. the guys you have been comparing him to, but he needs to start utilizing his skills or else he could be just a jumpshooter. For a second round pick he is a steal. But don't expect him to be anysort of contributor in a Duncan era.
