If there is no next year...

Post#1 » by Nolan » Wed Aug 24, 2011 1:16 am

Talks between the players and owners haven't exactly been going so well, so saying we might not see a lot of NBA basketball next year isn't exactly a shot in the dark.

So if next season is cancelled or shortened does that help or hinder our chances at contending in the coming years. The shortened season in 1999 helped us a ton and we ended up winning the finals. Thoughts?

I don't think the fact that season was only 50 games helped us winning the chip in 99. We would've won whether it was 50 or 82 games. Our team was relatively young then and TD was only in his 2nd year.

As for the here and now, we really don't have much time, if any at all, to win another title. If this season is in fact cancelled then we can definitely kiss our title hopes with this playing group goodbye.

I personally do agree with the notion that veteran teams have an edge in a shorten season. Young guys are able to endure a longer season and I think veteran guys are more prone to injuries and also needs less time to gel together than a younger group. So I do feel that the 99 Spurs has sort of an advantage over the rest of the league.

Problem is, even thou Tim and Manu are old, are we really a veteran team? With Parker, Joseph, Leonard, Neal, Splitter, Blair, and even the younger guys like DaSean Butler, Danny Green, etc, we're more "young" than "old" aren't we?

This time, I don't think we have an advantage over the rest of the league.

I don't think we're veteran team anymore. But our 2 best players are guys that could use the extra rest, and with Manu and Duncan well rested I think we could have a serious advantage over other teams.
