Wojnarowski: Spurs to Amnesty Jefferson

The Spurs have decided to use the amnesty clause on contract of Richard Jefferson, league sources tell Y! Sports. He has 3 years, $30M left.

Well, there were clear indications that we intend to do that, showing interest ni FA SFs like Caron Butler and Tayshaun Prince... Let's hope it's for the better.

I'd be pleased with either one... as activity-wise, both are definite upgrades over Jefferson, who lacked that focus. Same goes for Josh Howard.
But out of all the SFs, I'd like Prince the most.

The entire Jefferson situation was handled poorly
Spurs dodged a bullet last year when Jefferson opted out of his contract, and then they messed up over-paying to bring him back
A year later they're gonna amnesty him and take a 30 million dollar loss
It's the type of misstep that should cost the GM his job

The RJ deal had more to do with Holt than it did with Buford. I have a sneaking suspicion Holt knew this clause was coming last summer so he didn't really care about this contract. We neeeded to fill a gap at SF and resigning RJ was our only good option at the time.
I've hated RJ since he came here so I can't say i'm sad to see him leave.

With the big 3 all getting older, I feel that whoever we sign in place of Jefferson might also need to take a little bit of the scoring load, too. Ironic how that was Jefferson's strongest weapon but he never fit in our offense. Out of the most talked-about options - Howard, Butler and Prince, who do you think can help us not only defensively but also on the other end the most? If Howard gets back to his healthy days, I'd probably want him the most. If Duncan and Manu were 3-4 years younger, then no doubt Prince would be the best fit.

Well Prince and Butler are off the market... Howard I definitely like, and would be revived here.

Butler I know about, did Tayshaun re-up with Detroit?
I'm not so happy about Howard. I was kind of expecting Tough Juice to sign here and am pretty disappointed that he didn't.

I think we should sign Howard and one of the pretty good bigs still out there

Ya i'm fine with Howard. The reality is we need help inside more than we do on the wing. I'm fine with with Manu, Neal, Anderson, Green and Leonard on the wing anyway.

Since we missed out on Butler, and RJ is gone, I'm happy to have Leonard and Anderson man the 3. I'm assuming both will play harder than RJ ever did.

Agreed, guys.... and yeah, I'd honestly be fine with going young at SF... it'd ultimately be beneficial for both players to get a lot of time.

You guys aren't understanding the cap situation right now.
What we have right now with RJ still on the roster is the MINI-MLE (3 million). If we sign Howard, we'd have nothing left.
If we amnesty RJ, then we have the full MLE (5 million) on the table. Josh Howard will atleast take half of that. What good bigmen is out there for half of MLE that's gonna have a big effect on our team? Do you see a starting caliber big man better than Splitter or Blair for 2.5 mil?
And I just don't see how going with Kawhi and James Anderson is fine at SF. We might as well blow things up if that's the case. Kawhi is too unproven to start and is going to be madly inconsistent. You can't honestly expect Kawhi to play like Shawn Marion in year 1. And you're gonna get killed defensively with James Anderson as your starting SF. Are we gonna force Manu to always take the best scorer now and also rely on him to go all out on offense?
Hate RJ all you want. I don't like him either. But RJ is still a better player than Kawhi or James Anderson. Our best chance at a title is with him onboard.

I'm not expecting Kawhi to come in and be Shawn Marion or Gerald Wallace in year one. But I know he's capable of coming in and playing tough defense, crashing the boards and providing some energy and those are all things RJ's failed miserably at in his time here. Kawhi will struggle on the offensive end but thats really no big deal since we have no lack of scoring options.
Also i'm guessing that we address our need inside via trade or sign and trade. There's no way we're getting anyone half decent for either of the MLE options.
