SLAM: TJ Ford agrees to deal with Spurs

Post#1 » by Ballings7 » Fri Dec 9, 2011 4:07 am

TJ Ford will be taking his talents to San Antonio, where he’ll back up Tony Parker. From the Express-News: “After agreeing to sign a contract with the Spurs that will make him Tony Parker’s primary backup at the point guard position, former University of Texas star T.J. Ford said he was anxious to open training camp with the Spurs on Friday. ‘I can’t wait to get there,’ he said from his home in Houston. Ford is expected to sign a contract for the NBA veteran minimum. With eight seasons in the NBA with Milwaukee, Toronto and Indiana, that makes the deal worth $1.266 million, which will be pro-rated for the shortened season. Just one week removed from playing for KK Zagreb in the Euroleague, where he emigrated after the NBA locked out its players in July, Ford said he is more than ready for the start of Spurs camp. ‘This is a great opportunity for me to continue to play,’ said Ford, who led the Longhorns to the NCAA Final Four in 2003. ‘I understand my role in the NBA now. I accept it and look forward to getting started on Friday. I want to help these guys pick up where they left off in the regular season and I believe I can be a positive factor for them off the bench.’”

I think this is a pretty nice move, especially at the vet. min. Ford's not what he used to be, but from what I've seen recently still has quickness and creating ability... haven't seen enough of him to comment on his defense.

I like the pickup a lot. He's a cheap option and he'll fit in nicely.

^^^ That's hilarious. Has he ever been the best PG on his team, let alone the NBA? Thanks for the lols though.

Good move to get him though. Pretty much a perfect backup point for us and he should thrive in Pop's system.

Nice pick up. Really good move to fill the spot vacated by G Hill. No way will he usurp Parkers starting spot though. He has played behind a lot of worse PG's and couldn't take the job away from them.

Not my ideal backup PG. I wanted someone who could run the team and focuses on the defensive end. Someone like Anthony Carter or Earl Watson would've been my choice.

I actually have always liked Carter's game as a tough, good defender and a guy who can initiate the offense, and picks out his spots here and there to score himself. Watson's similar in that mold, but more of a gunner.

Carter and Watson are both done as far as i'm concerned.

Ford fits nicely into our high tempo offense and he's not exactly a horrible defender.
