Well we could use some more posters and we needed another point guard.

Would of preferred we wait to sign Turiaf... but this is still a pretty good pick-up, and a 2nd PG was needed... but I still would of liked Turiaf more

Awesome an aussie on my favourite team! I hope patty can learn a few things from tp manu and pop and grow into a solid back up pg.

We have a lightening quick pg rotation with tp and patty now.

Mills has the potential to be a top 10 pg imo. Great Pickup spurs see you in june at the united center.

Wow, I'm an Aussie but even I couldn't go that far.

Parker is pretty much the perfect mentor for Patty as he likes to play as a scoring point guard who uses his pace to advantage. But Patty also likes to hoist the 3's.

I really hope he works out for ya.

Wow...simply wow...?
I'm an Australian and you couldnt pay me to say that

The guy wasnt even the best PG during his stint in the NBL (Australian Basketball competetion)
He couldnt defend anyone at the NBL level and we know from what we have seen is that is isnt super athletic.
He's a solid shooter from outside and has pretty good footspeed. But in a league full of big strong guards like Rose, Westbrook, Dwill etc he'll never be able to defend his postion at a level high enough to be remotely close to top 10.
Offensivly he'll primarily be a spot up shooter, i can't see him being any more than mediocre at attacking the rim and his vision isn't any higher than average level for a PG.

I think in the right system he'll be a solid contributor, may even develop into a starter for a team maybe like Orlando (with a star interior presence) or Miami (space the floor and allow James and Wadre to slash) but Top 10 is well and truly beyond his means.

That all being said, I'm excited that another aussie will join the Spurs and I do think he'll fill a role for us. But i dont think we'll see Pop handing him the keys anytime soon.

Good to see Patty get a run with such a quality organisation. I wonder what hand assistant coach (and Australian national team coach) Brett Brown played in the decision.

Anyway, looks like I'll have to bring my Timmy jersey out of retirement and get excited for some Spurs ball for the remainder of the season :)

Honestly, I'm disappointed because I expected someone we can trust to contribute right away. Patty Mills is likely going to be a third string PG here and what we need is a backup PG. We already have a young and inexperienced third string PG in Cory Joseph. I don't trust Mills as a primary backup PG.

Patty had worked his way from 3rd stringer to being the primary backup at Portland, and he was decent in that role. His game (at its best) is not dissimilar to Parker's.

He was fine defensively in the NBA, too.

I'm sorry for not buying that.

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/patrick_m ... stats.html

The Blazers basically played an 8 man rotation with Roy, Batum, and Fernandez off the bench. I'm looking at a guy who gets between 5 to 9 minutes a game for the last two months of his NBA career. By that thought, I have a hard time believing he was the primary backup PG. Brandon Roy took that role.

Again, we're looking at a 23 year old guy with 2 years of NBA experience and 71 games worth of regular season games. Sure, I read he's quick, but even in averages of 12 minutes a game, he launches 2 three pointers. He shoots a low percentage from the field.

No one would say he's currently a dependable backup PG unless you're his fanboy.

^ Agreed
Lets not forget Andre Miller was their starter and he is simply aweful from the 3pt line which is one of Mills strengths which is why he got whatever minutes he did.

I hope I am suprised and Mills turns out to be a decent player for us, but as I spent a great deal of time telling other basketball fans, here where i live, that Mills simply isnt good enough to have a really impactful long term NBA career.

Most of my mates here still think that Shane Heal was a better option at PG than Mills.

But if he does begin to emulate some of his collegiate or international form in a Spurs jersey he could end up being a nice backup. Besides the way Parker has been playing we wont need alot of minutes out of our second string PGs

That's true that Roy started to take that role, even with the injury woes he was a decent player that Portland had invested a lot of money in so they wanted some chance at value from him. It's no great shame to have him overtake you.

He averaged >10 minutes per game from December-March in that season, then his minutes dropped in April when Roy worked his way back in. He was generally first PG off the bench through most of that season.

I appreciate you're just making a point, but to pull people up as fanboys for suggesting he is okay as a backup PG is a bit over the top. Nobody (bar one overly keen fellow!) is suggesting he's going to be a superstar- but he's probably a good fit for SA.

LMFAO!!

Sorry but as an australian I find that pretty funny. We do tend to be a pretty diverse looking bunch of folks.

I seem to remember a game for Portland where the commentators kept mentioning they had never seen a black australian before which I thought was funny as well.

Question though, never seen Andrew Bogut play, or some old Bulls games with Luc Longley?
