It is a bit high but its seems that's just the way the market for centers goes. Glad we have him locked up though.

   :naaa: :eek1: :eek2:

As a Jazz fan, I've learned to not question what the Spurs do as an organization. The Rings are proof enough. But it feels like an albatross contract. I know Splitter is important, but 9m per seems way excessive. Big man or not, that's crazy.

I was afraid of this. He better improve because the Splitter of right now is not worth near this amount.

*Just updated the title.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--spurs-finalizing--45-million-deal-with-tiago-splitter-195615678.html

The San Antonio Spurs are finalizing a four-year, $36 million-plus contract extension for center Tiago Splitter, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Splitter, 28, developed into an important part of the Spurs' run to the NBA Finals and had significant interest around the league as a restricted free agent.

Portland had strongly considered signing Splitter to an offer sheet near the $9 million salary that Spurs paid, but Splitter's representatives and San Antonio worked out most of the details of an agreement on Monday night and into Tuesday, sources said.

The fact that its only 4 years makes me feel a bit better.

What about the rumors dealing with a trade with the Suns (Splitter for Gortat and a 1st round pick)?
I read something on SpursTalk, they'd be very happy if it went on.
I watched a bit of Gortat when he was in Orlando and when he arrived in Phoenix: pretty good finisher, good rebounder, not afraid to put the body in the crowd

That's way too much for what he brings to the table. He couldn't even get on the floor in the finals. And I think we've seen the best of him anyway.

This is crazy. That's way too much for Tiago. He has too much weakness to be paid that much and we'll eventually need to find a dominant rebounding/shotblocking/low post scorer next to him. Basically, we need to find a superstar big next to him. Tiago ain't worth 9 mil a year.

But... losing him would've been death. As a fan, their salary means nothing to us. It's the team's talent level that is important. So as long as we come back stronger instead of weaker and older, who cares?

The problem is, I don't see a scenario where Miami doesn't make the Finals over the next two years. And Splitter has proven to be ineffective against them. He's an okay player, probably the best big we've had since Robinson retired, but that isn't saying a whole lot. Who's he going against? Mohammed, Rasho, Elson...

I don't like the deal at all. It'd be one thing if we were overpaying based on potential, but he is what he is and I don't see him improving a whole lot.

Who exactly were we bidding against anyway?
