Is Exec of the Year basically a GM of the Year award?

If so, this doesn't really make sense for me. I mean, all he did was switch Gary Neal to Marco Bellinelli. Marco has been good for us, but Gary wasn't so bad either. Marco just does stuff a little better. But that addition alone shouldn't have won him the Exec of the year award though.

If this is more related to winning, I feel like that's more reflected on the Coach of the Year award.

I'm just curious as to what he did exactly to win the award over other guys. I see the 2nd best Exec was Phoenix GM and they mention that it was for turning the Suns into a 48 win team. That credit should also be given to Jeff Hornacek. Not to the GM.

Toronto traded Rudy Gay away and the thinking was to give up on the season, instead they shined instead after the trade. Ujiri was applauded. But Chicago traded Luol Deng away and instead they stay afloat. These credits go to the coach. The GMs didn't try to put on more talent to make it easier for the coach to win games. Their original plan was to call off the season and focus on the future. The coach just won't let the players give up.

It's a useless award IMO.

Yeah, it is basically GM of the year. The amazing part is Buford has never won the award, so I think the nod is mostly cumulative. I don't think GM's can be measured on a year by year basis. We had obscene bench production during the year, so even though Marco has MIA this playoffs and Blair>>>Ayers, he made tough decisions this summer (Manu/Tiago over say Monta/Robin Lopez) that have paid dividends during these playoffs. RC should've won the award before now.

I feel like this is more of a lifetime achievement win for RC rather than a win for what he's done this year.

Are you sure? I thought this was a direct result of the Austin Daye trade. :D

Long overdue and I am enthused he finally received it.

Congratulations! He is definitely an integral part of why this franchise has been so successful, in addition to the coaching staff and players, all the way down to the ball boys and parking valet officials.

It may have been more for keeping the team together not tinkering too much when everyone said they were too old and too slow. Then turn around get the best record in the toughest conference.
I think the NBA is finally coming around to understand just how many young front office studs pass through the doors of SA.
Congrats RC
