Just wanna share some thoughts about Kyle Anderson. Been watching his D-league games lately because he's been putting up great numbers and I wanted to take a look.

He's been playing PF basically for Austin but he's doing a lot of ballhandling. I feel that PF is probably where his future is in the NBA. In a lot of ways, he's a stretch 4. He plays on the perimeter and creates his offense from there. Bigs usually have even more trouble guarding guys on the perimeter, and that's also where Kyle gets even more advantage from his ballhandling skills compared to if he was playing SF and having SFs guard him. Unlike Boris Diaw, Kyle is a lot better dribbler. He can really get his own man with it.

At 6'9'' and with 7'2'' wingspan, I think he has adequate size to be a PF. He needs to get stronger though.

I think for him to be successful, he's going to have to wait until Manu retires because when Manu is gone, Kyle is the best guy currently on the team to replace what Manu can do with the 2nd unit. Kyle's biggest impact is in his ability to create for others, much like Manu. Offensively, I really see a Manu-like role with this team instead of a Boris Diaw-like role.

I agree though. I think we need him for the playoffs either way.

how about his defense? For sure he's not there as far as nba pf, but in terms of speed?

I don't think Kyle will ever have speed as an advantage.. Ever..

However, getting past your man isn't really about speed. It's about ball handling and being able to use hesitations dribbles. Kyle has always been able to get past people despite being slow, even if it's not to the level of Chris Paul.

Defensively.. He's just not ready yet. When will he be ready depends on how his body develops. Right now what looks decent in his defensive game is his rebounding ability. That's about it. His wingspan allows him to play bigger than his size I'm and he's always box out for rebounds. Other than that it's a nightmare. He gets lost on defense. He can't stay with anyone on the perimeter, which is why I think his best position will have to be at PF because we're starting to have a lot of stretch PFs and it seems he's better off matched up against those guys. Defense is never his thing and I'm not sure it'll ever be this thing.

His upside surely is on the offensive end where he can be a guy that does a lot of things well like Boris.

As far as his Boris like of playing, we all know what Diaw can give us on offense, but his defense has been good when matters against guy like Aldridge, Nowitzki, Griffin. Of course Kyle is not there yet with his body, but maybe his defensive speed against that kind of bodies was not that far away..
Anyways, this is why he fell to the last spot in the 1st round.. he's definitly a project to develop in a couple of years..

Kyle is a very tricky player to project though and I totally understand how he fall. I personally wanted KJ McDaniels.

I think in the draft, you're looking at two things. Guys with star potential and the role players.

Unless you're a big man, you're gonna need to have atleast average athleticism. The more athletic you are, the more star potential you have. Kyle has below average athleticism and he's not a big man. So I think teams don't look at him and say.. There's a future star. His ceiling is limited. So you're looking at him and thinking he's not gonna be a star in this league.. Possibly a role player.

Now with drafting role players, you usually don't want to wait 5 years. 5 years are what players with huge potential get. Projected role players with low ceiling don't get that luxury. What you typically want from role players are guys who have ONE specific skill set that could translate as soon as he get to the league, usually a rebounder, a shooter, or a defensive stud. The hope ofcourse is that one skill translate as soon as he comes to the league and then you can focus on him adding one single skill that makes him a bit more versatile. For example, a defensive stud with a 3 pointer is a valuable 3&D player. A rebounder with a shot can be a stretch four. Even if there's no single skill added over his entire career, role players have to have one skill that is considered above average in this league. We see shooting specialists.. or strictly a rebounder like Reggie Evans.

With Kyle, there's nothing in his game that quickly translate into the NBA. His biggest attribute and the one that everyone is raving about? His passing ability. Well, he gotta have the ball in his hands to be given the green light to create for the team to maximize that skill. Who's going to do that for a rookie? And he's a very good passer for his size, but let's not mistake him for a Magic Johnson type playmaker.

He has no specific skill that is above average. His shot needs working and unless you're already an elite shooter in college, you usually don't become one in the NBA. At best, you become very good with lots of time, but nothing elite. Anything on the defensive side is below average to begin with except rebounding. But even his rebounding doesn't project to translate well to the NBA. This is why when he gets in a game early in the season, nothing about his game stands out. This is like a worse version of Boris Diaw when he first drafted, but without Boris' athleticism. I mean atleast young Boris was skinny and was quick.

Kyle Anderson is like a taller version of Nando De Colo. A guy that can do a lot of things, but nothing at an elite level. In a lower level league, Kyle Anderson will be considered as a guy that does everything at an elite level. He'd be Lebron James. Just not at the NBA level.

I am skeptical of Kyle Anderson's future. For a role player, he's good at the wrong things (passing), and bad at the right things (athleticism, shooting, defense).
