http://www.foxsports.com/nba/story/report-spurs-reject-multiple-trade-offers-for-tiago-splitter-062615It's expected that if San Antonio plans to sign a player like LaMarcus Aldridge or Marc Gasol this summer that they first need to move Tiago Splitter's contract.
But according to ESPN's Marc Stein, the Spurs turned down several offers for their starting center on the night of the draft:
"...the Spurs actually rebuffed trade interest from teams hoping to pry Splitter away in conjunction with Thursday's NBA draft, raising the possibility that Splitter might stick around."
This must be connected to Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, who can take seriously reduced deals that give San Antonio enough flexibility to keep almost everyone and add a max contract. It's a tricky route to go down, but if any team is smart enough to make it happen it's the Spurs.
Or, maybe the offers for Splitter that they received on Thursday simply weren't very good. That's also a very logical possibility.
I'm guessing teams were willing to take him back along with our first for a second rounder or they were just low balling us assuming that we're desperate to dump him so we can sign LMA.

I don't think that the FO was going to just trade away Tiago without assurance that we'll get a top FA. It'd be a nightmare if we traded Tiago and end up not getting anyone.

Definitely. But it's good to hear that teams actually want him and his contract.

Maybe we were just getting low-balled by other teams since its early in FA. I'd be interested to know what exactly was offered. Since everyone is assuming that we are trying to dump his salary, I'm guessing what was offered was crappy draft picks or 2nd rounders next year.

I hate that it's Tiago being offered around. I think Tiago is the one we should keep. Diaw is the one we should trade. Kyle Anderson should be able to play some backup PF. If not, even Kawhi has played a lot of small ball PF. Without Tiago, we'd have no Center.

Tiago will have to go as the FO looks to keep Green as the higher priority besides LMA.

Definitely not wanting to sound unappreciative or hating on our own players, because Tiago was a very important piece (and just a nice dude, someone you'd want as your mate in real life) but looking constructively at him, he was too weak inside (especially on offense but also D) and being paid a lot of money.
We could not only upgrade that position but actually go in another direction.
On the article, I agree, I bet teams tried to rip us off.

I'm thinking about the future though. Duncan will only be here another year, even if he resign. And it's been well chronicled that LMA doesn't want to play full time Center. If the choice is to pair Aldridge in the future with Splitter or Diaw, I think you gotta choose Splitter. He's a Center and he's younger, so he can atleast be paired with LMA for the next 4 years. It's not easy finding a good center. Look at the guys we have before Tiago.
Tiago makes 9.2 mil. Diaw makes 8 mil. I'd prefer us to move Diaw and Patty/Kyle than letting Tiago go. Diaw's role on this team as a small ball PF can be replaced with Kawhi or Kyle playing PF. But we have no Tiago replacement on this team.

Who are the Spurs look for in return for Splitter?
I'm sure cap space is # 1 on the list and perhaps a couple of players on expiring deals is a need?

If the idea of trading Splitter is to open up cap space to sign LMA, then players on expiring deals are not what we're looking for. It'll be purely cap space and if they can, future draft picks.
