Add another job title to Gregg Popovich’s already impressive coaching resume — Team USA Coach.
The Spurs’ Popovich has been named the country’s national coach for 2017-2020, USA Basketball announced Friday.
Popovich, 66, will replace Mike Krzyzewski following the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. Krzyzewski is moving to an advisory role alongside Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo.
Popovich is set to coach the men’s squad for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
In a release from USA Basketball, Popovich — a 1970 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy — said he was “humbled and honored” to be tabbed for the job.
He'll be great for them but i'm surprised that he took the job, I figured he'd be slowing things down later in his career.
