Summer League 2016

Post#1 » by Nolan » Mon Jun 27, 2016 5:45 pm

We're going to competing in both the Vegas summer league (defending our title) and the Utah league. So for everyone around here that desperate to get a Spurs fix like me we'll be getting 2+ weeks of summer league ball this year!

The official schedule and roster(s) haven't been released yet. But we do know that these guys will be playing for us:

Nikola Milutinov, 7’0″ center - Our first round pick from last year. If you look in the other thread about him you'll get a decent lowdown and his game.

Ryan Arcidiacono, 6’3″ point guard - Saw a bit of him at Nova. Seems like a good floor general, he's very active and has a decent all around game. Question is can he stay in front of guys at the next level.

Angel Rodriguez, 5’11” point guard - Quick offensive mind PG, don't know if he's skilled enough to overcome his stature though.

Bryn Forbes, 6’3″ shooting guard - Really don't know much about him to be honest. But he shot 48% from 3 on almost 7 attempts a game last year so I'm assuming that he's a pretty good shooter.

I'm excited about summer league. If we sign a player for the max or near it we will be filling out the roster with young guys on cheap contracts so, there is a real incentive for these guys to 'bring it' because they have a real shot at making the team...

Very very true. Chasing a max slot guy might also explain why we're pushing to sign Bertans and LVC this summer too.

Here's what I think is happening in the FO right now...I think we have a two-fold strategy...Ideally we want to sign a max FA and fill in with young guys and a couple euro stash guys. If we can't do that then I believe they will want to avoid the over bloated contracts that the mid tier type players will command this summer (Delladova for $10M kind of bloated contract) and save money for a run at a top guy next summer. If it ends up playing out like that we go heavier with the Euro's and maybe throw some money on a 1 year contract on a player who is trying to maximize his worth for next summer...

Yeah I'm all for chasing those types of players on 1+1 type contracts.

So sounds like Murray might not even play. We might hold off on signing him to his rookie deal to preserve cap space.

How would that work? I thought the cap hold is there until you renounce him for that season and send him overseas? I don't see us sending him overseas...

Seen it on projectspurs. Here's the quote:

http://projectspurs.com/2016-articles/spurs-2016-summer-league-roster-taking-shape.html

The Spurs’ Summer League team will begin playing from July 4-18 in both Utah and Las Vegas. Buford though wasn’t sure yet if Murray would join the Summer League team because Murray’s contract may have to be signed at a later date, in order to go through the process of signing free agents in a specific order to make cap numbers work best.

“We’ll have to work through the sequencing of contracts and I would imagine that that’ll have an impact on when we get those done, so the structure for the rest of our roster will impact our ability to sign a lot of players.”

I'm not really sure of the reasoning behind it but I'm sure RC has a far better understanding of the CBA than me

So we've officially added two more guys to our SL rosters:

Cady Lalanne 6’9″ forward/center - Our 2nd rounder from last year. athleticish 4 with some range. Looked pretty decent in Austin last year.

Alex Kirk, 7’0″ center - Spent some time with Cav's a couple years ago and spent last year in Italy. Big body can shot it a bit but he's slow.

Did a little youtube/google research on him. Didn't find much though. Big kid with wide shoulders and long arms, looks like a capable shot blocker.

Yeah, it was the Anderson/Simmons show pretty much. Bryn Forbes played pretty well though but I doubt he makes the roster.

Forbes good, he is a light out shooter and the Cavs need to watch this.
He can really help a team

Reminds me a lot of Gary Neal. Guy can score.

Still not sold on Anderson's offensive game. Definitely not if he is playing a small 4 at least. He gets position down low then his lack of strength has him bounce backwards off defenders and ends up taking ugly fading hooks and fallaway jumpers that will get blocked by athletic defenders.

He can work down low against your regular small forwards and hopefully improve his 3 but I don't see him as a 4 at all, unless he goes in Boris' diet that is.

I agree, Anderson is a bench 3 at best. Not a starting 3 and definitely not a 4 at all. I like that he is being aggressive in the summer but he did that last year also, only to pass up wide open shot after wide open shot in the NBA regular season and destroy our offensive flow.
Forbes is playing great and he just may stick around if he keeps it up. He was very streaky at MSU though and hopefully we aren't being fooled by one of his hot streaks right now. I am rooting for him.

Damn just make him the guaranteed pg off the bench and speed his development, he looks good, too much potential to have him sit out a year or spend half of it in the d league.

Return to San Antonio Spurs
