Duncan, 41, a St. Croix native, pledged $250,000 and matched a $1 million donation to spearhead a recovery effort, which included hundreds of thousands of pounds of supplies he helped personally deliver. For his humanitarian work, Duncan is the Express-News 2017 Sportsman of the Year. It is the second time he has received the accolade. He also was honored in 1999.
Duncan’s first step to aid his hometown began with an article for The Players Tribune, which provides athletes with a platform to write first-person stories.... “He really felt a special need to be part of the recovery and use his celebrity to try and bring as many people on board as possible,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “I think it surprised people that he did (write the article) because he had been so reticent to take credit or be in front of the camera. But when people saw that, they realized that the need was great and his purpose was to involve as many bodies as he could, whether it was contributing money or merchandise or time.”
In two weeks, and with help from the San Antonio Food Bank and H-E-B, Duncan said 150,000 pounds of food, generators and refrigerators were dropped in St. Thomas, 200,000-plus pounds were dropped in St. Croix and 6,000 pounds of medical supplies were distributed.
