We don't know yet about Danny's and Rudy's decisions, but it appears that Joff will opt out:
On the Joffrey Lauvergne front, the belief is he will not opt into his $1.6 million player option, while more lucrative offers he'll consider to play overseas. If Lauvergne doesn't return, it leaves LaMarcus Aldridge and Davis Bertans, who is considered stretch-four, as the other big men on the roster.

The Spellman second workout news makes even more sense in this context.

Great draft, very happy that we got another steal in a projected lotto pick landing to us, and we got a lot more athletic overall. But the night culminated with the best news tweet:

already thin at sf, needed green back...

i wonder why they didnt bring gay back unless his looking for a final payday, even gasol got a loyalty contract after 1yr, gay shouldve shown some loyalty and the spurs wouldve treat him like a vet with a loyalty contract

They may yet, but like Danny's, it was a player option. Maybe Rudy re-ups with us for a longer term? Hopefully so, as he was an effective scorer and rebounder for us, especially as he got his bounce and confidence back later in the season. We have unfinished business to realize together.

anyone else want kawhi back on a new contract? im only afraid he pulls another stunt sitting out again....

without him, the roster looks good they can still compete for a playoff spot...nobody is winning anything as long gsw still has its big4...

As much credit I give to GSW for how they develop the team. Their success will not only increases their key players worth. They also know that eventually they will have to trade away one of their main core guys. More talks have come down to Draymond or Klay as the prime candidates. Personally, I'm on board to the thought of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" routine. Eventually success collects an expensive tab. The Warriors will eventually have to get smart and to what's best for their bank roll in order to afford their roster from starter to bench role in the long run.

As to Kawhi, the name of the game here is "Keep Kawhi" in order to do such, the Spurs need to re-route their roster around Kawhi in order to keep him a Spur. Is it possible the Spurs may have gotten comfortable with their trademark that they forgot they to must adapt to some changes with the times? Yes it's possible.

To Kawhi, I think in the end, he'll come to his senses and be back as a Spur. It's unfortunate that his injury cause him to not only miss time with the Spurs, but caused some friction as well. I think don't feel the fam link with his uncle playing his agent right now with questionable motivations to boot.

The Spurs also need to do some tweaks in and around the roster to bolster it around Kawhi a bit more to give them a better opportunity to be a worthy adversary come playoff time.

Overlooked this off-season has been this recognition by his peers that LMA was given: TEAMMATE OF THE YEAR (BACKBONE AWARD)

Congratulations, LMA! I'll never tire of reiterating just how important he was for us. It really was a team effort to hold it all together this past season, but nobody exemplified "... heart and soul of their team" more or better than LMA with his steady low-maintenance team-oriented character and consistently highly quality of on-court play.

More recently, but equally deserving, Becky Hammon was promoted to the front bench as Spurs assistant, replacing James Borrego.

Spurs promote Hammon to the front row
Becky Hammon’s pioneering NBA journey received another boost from the Spurs when they announced Wednesday she will move into a position of prominence for a woman in pro basketball.

It’s a promotion that elevates her from the back of the bench to the front — a first for a female assistant.

With her move up in the pecking order of Gregg Popovich’s assistants, Hammon will now sit courtside, elbow-to-elbow with fellow assistants Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka.

The Spurs made history on Aug. 4, 2014 when they made Hammon, a longtime WNBA All-Star guard who played her final eight seasons with the San Antonio Stars, the first full-time, paid female assistant coach in the history of major North American pro sports....

The Milwaukee Bucks made headlines in May when interviewed Hammon for their head coaching vacancy. Although the job ultimately went to former Atlanta Hawks coach and Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer, Hammon’s interview bolstered her reputation as the most likely candidate to shatter the NBA’s glass ceiling.

https://www.expressnews.com/spurs-nation/article/Spurs-promote-Hammon-13031384.php

Having eared her way at each stage, it's refreshing that there's no talk about this being 'because she's a woman' but because Becky's a good enough coach to be worthy of the promotion.

In roster news:
Read on Twitter

Spurs extend qualifying offer to Bertans
The Spurs made forward Davis Bertans a restricted free agent, tendering him a $1.6 million qualifying offer, league sources said Wednesday.... If the Spurs and Bertans desire a long-term deal, the team could rescind its qualifying offer and use his early Bird rights to ink him to a four-year deal worth up to $35.1 million.

In his second season with the Spurs in 2017-18, Bertans averaged 5.9 points per game over 77 contests while shooting 37.3 percent from 3-point range....

"He's a wonderful shooter, but he also understands how to play," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said afterward. "He's really unselfish and he works hard. And he really spreads the court for us, obviously."

However else the other moving parts settle, and whatever else transpires, the best news of the season is already here:

In summer of discontent, Pop finds reason to return
Last week, the man with ample money and curiosity to fly anywhere on the globe chose to board a plane to San Diego, not to sightsee but instead to recruit.... A couple of nights later, the man who could have thrown his cell phone into the ocean was using it instead to talk to a teenager from Reading, Pennsylvania. The Spurs had just made Lonnie Walker IV their first-round draft pick Thursday, and so Popovich set forth on starting another new relationship.... He did this knowing full well that in the coming months and perhaps years, Walker will make him yell and scream and want to tear his hair out, just like every other player he has coached.

Popovich got on the plane. He picked up the phone. And for a franchise in dire need of some normalcy, he was there to provide it. It can’t have been easy.... A Spurs staffer said there have been moments this offseason when Popovich has allowed himself to show just a little bit of his anguish, but for the most part, it has been business as usual. He’s been as involved as ever in roster planning, and everything else that his title of president of Spurs basketball entails.

But PATFO haven't given that. It's just what he could be eligible for. What they actually gave was a $1.6M QO (he made $1.3M last year).

looking at both teams in LA, they dont need to gutted their roster to get pg13 and lebron...dunno why they want kawhi, they still need a big who can defend bigs downlow, do the dirty work (jordan/mcgee) or opt for the big with range aka cousins who are available in FA...

lakers dont have to gut their roster for those 2 players, find a big on the cheap, they go after kawhi following year
clippers have harris, have pg13 and lebron is still good, they can keep jordan or trade him to get the 2 players in on max...dunno about rest of their roster, but balmer has no problem spending money
or both sign somewhere out easts?
suns just too young man, same with kings

Is Lebron on the Spurs his next best option?

Post#58 » by Steel Spur » Fri Jun 29, 2018 10:09 am

Let's say neither Kawhi nor Paul George go the the lakers. And let's say kawhi still bails to LAL/LAC. What's the ceiling of an Aldrige/Lebron lineup.

Micheal Beasley or Rudy Gay or both?

Post#59 » by Steel Spur » Fri Jun 29, 2018 10:35 am

Spurs desperately need someone to backup Aldrige. And with Kawhi probably gone they can fill in at both the 3 or 4. Been reading mixed feelings on whether the Knicks keep Beasley. ...say he's good enough to ruin the tank. So, he might not come a vet min cheap unless he wants to play with lifelong friend Durant.
