Shout-out to Jaron who has been showing his expanding game even when we had a full team, and especially now with the absence of White, Metu, and Walker.

Down 20 at the half. We've scored 22 points so far. Nine points in the second Q. Yikes. 24.3% FG, 21.4% from 3. Yikes! It hurts to be without three starters, one of whom is a calm facilitator who leads the way. We look out of sync, which is not entirely unexpected, but I don't like that we're not hustling, getting outrebounded and outchanced.

Brought the lead down to 12, and then Suns went on a big run to finish the 3rd Q and their lead ballooned up to 24. Effort to play as a team has been spotty.

Well ok so it was less about playing the right way to the end and more about getting players time on the court to show what they have. At around 4:40 left, all five players were replaced. Players in SL have different reasons for being there, and it seemed more about showcasing that than executing our program. Wish we had a better showing, but we got what we needed to from the players who are likely going to get a serious look to play with the big club this season.

Western Conference Summer League Notes

Post#89 » by Smitty731 » Sat Aug 4, 2018 1:30 am

Hi all!

The last few years I've dropped a bunch of notes from Summer League. This year we broke them up by conference! Here is the West:

I learned a lot. And not just that I don't enjoy transcription!

Hope you enjoy!

Thanks very much for the work you did to put this together, Smitty! Really appreciate it. Some cool insights here for us:
If a note is “quoted”, it came direct from a party involved with the player or team.
If a note isn’t in quotes, it is the author’s thought on the subject....

San Antonio Spurs

*The Kawhi Leonard cloud hung over everything. It made it hard to get in questions that weren’t related to that situation at time. When you did, it almost seemed like a relief to the member of the Spurs to get to talk about something else.
*On Lonnie Walker IV: “He’s really good with the ball. He’s got to get rid of some of the bad shots, but that will happen. Defense needs work, but all these kids are awful on defense.”
*On re-signing Rudy Gay: “He meant the world to us last year. He’s just a true professional. Coming back from his injury the way he did, at his age, was enormous.
*On bringing back Marco Belinelli: “His best years were here in San Antonio. And the name of the game is shooting. He was one of the best options we could add.”
*On Dejounte Murray’s development: “Still a long way to go, but he’s getting there quickly. Terrific feel for the game. Great on the glass and works very hard. When he can just play and not have to think, he’s even better.”

I wonder if they offered any thoughts on which players in the G-League system (and who also played in the SL) they're considering bringing up?

As for the other teams, honest of the Jazz to say they were pleasantly surprised about Mitchell's fast development; not sure how serious the Kings are that Bagley will be better than Doncic; interesting that Memphis thought they overpaid for Kyle a bit, even if down the road the average salary rises so that should even things out.

spurs need to speed up one of the younger guys development by chucking them into the starting lineup or logging heavy minutes....learn on the go...
