Our fourth and penultimate pre-season game, first on the road. Derrick White has been handed the starting PG duties tonight, so we'll see how he fares against another rookie PG whose arrival fans have been anticipating.

We need to keep banding together, and forge ahead in coalescing our chemistry and team bond. Onward and upward.

Nice to see Pau starting again. It'll be good to have a look at what Dante brings with more minutes, too.

I have to ask you guys, how was Kawhi's effort level during preseason in years past? Because his defense for us right now is complete garbage.

Early observations tonight:
I don't understand why everyone else thinks DeRozan is going to clog things up for us. He is EXACTLY what this team needed last year and this year. Someone who can score on his own going to the basket when things break down offensively. We dont need him to shoot threes.
Rudy Gay needs to be healthy. He will be huge for us if he is.
Derrick White needs to be more aggressive. This is his time to grab his spot with authority. I know its barely even one quarter in but he has an outstanding opportunity right in front of him and I am not seeing him take it. He is letting things happen instead of making things happen.

I wouldn't worry about it until the season starts. I don't remember him going crazy for anything pre season. He's been off forever so he probably is still getting in game shape.

White playing much better in the 2nd. His aggressiveness draws a foul on Young and a hard cut to the basket gets him a bucket.
We need work with our second unit. It looks just like our team last year. No one can make a shot for themselves and we have to settle for contested threes or bad shots. We need to figure out how to mix it up a little with the 2nd unit.

For some reason - and I think it has to do with Pau being on the second unit the last 2 games - the second unit was doing very well. Pau's a wonderful facilitator, and uses his vision and 3 threat to our advantage. Jakob isn't showing much of anything after a solid first game, unfortunately. He sets screens, but can't make those Pau passes, get O rebounds, etc. Kind of a lacklustre, out-of-place, step-behind showing from him the last several games.

We shot 56.3% from the 3 in the first half :o

Only 38 FGs

Eighteen assists - good, 10 TOs - not.

High scoring game, better D needed.

Brutal 3rd Q from us, letting them shoot 64% and 40% from 3, with O rebound after O rebound in their favour resulting in buckets.

I don't like our defensive intensity at all right now, and it is affecting us on the other end as Hawks are forcing us to make quicker decisions and we are getting out of sync.

We came to within 4 points a couple of times only to let them go on runs to break open the lead. Can't recall the last time we allowed 100 points by the 3rd Q. Poor shooting and energy on both ends overall.

And no, it wasn't a double overtime game.

I don't care that it's a pre-season game, the sinking effort to start the 3rd and some of the fourth was unacceptable. Poor communication and late recovery play after play on D, getting absolutely destroyed on O rebound putbacks, and some P&Rs (Jakob really needs to wake up), missed back door cuts (Davis was late on a couple of those), all this coupled with no shots going in in the third (0-5 to start with some TOs thrown in) until about 7:30 with Derrick finally driving and hitting some FTs made for ugly un-Spursy basketball. We somehow ended up with 28 in that Q, which sounds decent, but not when we gave up 38. We looked like a G-League squad for much of it.

Rant out of the way, we had two starters out (DJ and LMA), and White settled in and grew serviceable on both ends; good all around game on both ends with 14 points (6-11, 1-3 from 3, 2-2FTs) with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Still a step slow in keeping his man in front of him on D, but maybe it's more because of what I'm used to from DJ whose slinky limbs have been a nightmare for PGs. White was a good floor general in his first start. Dante as a starter didn't help much on O but he's a good D presence for us; better off the bench (I wondered if maybe Davis there would have worked better for him and for us). DD had a poor shooting night, but distributed well, had 6 assists and a steal, so he contributed in other ways beyond his 15 points. A lot of other guys shot well, including Rudy, Bryn, and Beli, Patty, and Pau who also had 6 rebounds, a steal, and team-high 10 assists, thank you very much. Not bad for a 38-year old.

Not sure what's going on with Jakob. His boards were largely of the uncontested D variety. He ran the floor well, and had 3 assists, but his finishing around the basket was poor, the result of rushed passes or too low at his feet that he fumbled, but at other times, he didn't have any lift in his feet, and had poor body positioning for misses that ought to have been easy makes, and seemed a step behind mentally and physically. It made me appreciate Pau's fundamentals and patience in the post - the beautiful footwork, body control, and great moves - all the more. He's still got it, and Jakob needs a whole lot of it.

Davis has to show more of what he's got to give, and it can't just be shooting or missing 3s. He has a better all around game than he showed today. Metu made twice the overall contribution in half the time.

I liked the hustle and energy we showed when we brought the game to within 4 points 116-112 (seriously, still ridiculous to be typing that without any overtime). We finally got up on defenders, helped on D, got boards, deflections, passed it around from one side to the other, had good quick D to O transitions for easy points. We played as a more cohesive unit, showed some grit and heart on the court, and good enthusiasm from the bench in support.

Shout out to Bryn for a very good game on both ends, from hustling for loose balls, to driving creatively, to running out for long outlet passes, to getting up on his man. Great shooting game, but a a great showing of having his head in the game and making the right plays and putting in work to the little details.

Shout out also to the final out of bounds play to get Bryn that good look on his 3 attempt. Clever. Really creative and clever.

On to the next one. Hope we make a better showing on D team-wide and game-long. I hope everyone stays safe in and getting out of the hurricane.

So about this discussion:

When Young first let that shot fly, I didn't realize it was from so far away outside of 'normal' 3 range. All I saw was Bryn looking away to his left and it was at that point that Young put it up. Shocking to no one that I agree with Pop (and lando), but really, Young read the quick look away by Bryn and put up a prayer that he was actually known for doing in college.

Regardless of distance, given the little amount of time left, you have to keep at least one eye the ball handler and the potential set up (pick). I feel a bit bad for Bryn because he had an excellent overall game despite this play and the missed final attempt to tie. There's a tendency to magnify the final shot, when really every play brought us to this one. So it was a loss by a thousand mistakes on the whole team.

But in terms of Jeff's position, I'd agree more if Bryn actually contested and Young made the shot from where he did. Then you tip your hat knowing you did your best. But you always try and contest, and to the extent that it wasn't, that there is room for discussion about better D indicates that you don't just accept that shot from that distance. Seems to be a general difference of approach to things between accepting the rarer circumstances with some philosophical bent or always believing you can do something about them.

Yep and there it is. Got this from the Hawks board:
The play wasn’t drawn up for Young to pull up from just inside halfcourt. Young said the play was supposed to be a quick pick-and-roll that Alex Len would set at the top of the key. The Hawks ran that play numerous times in the final few minutes of the game, so Young had picked up some tendencies of Spurs point guard Bryn Forbes when the screen was coming. Forbes turned his head toward Len, who was coming to set the screen, and when he did that, Young fired.

This isn't to heap excessive fault on Bryn, because he had a good game. But in continuing the above discussion, it confirms that Young saw an opportunity and took it. Small details and awareness play after play.

Spurs' defense disappears in Atlanta
Gregg Popovich called timeout and asked his team if it could maybe play a little defense....

“Two defensive juggernauts, don’t you think?” Popovich deadpanned after a pinball-score loss that offered renewed concerns about his team’s ability to stop people....

Still, the defensive anti-clinic the Spurs put on Wednesday was not predictable to anybody. Not to this degree.

“I think that’s the highest score of a game I’ve played in, maybe ever,” guard Bryn Forbes said. “That was ridiculous.”

Popovich wasn’t apoplectic about the Spurs’ lack of defense, even on the final play. It is preseason after all. But Popovich did think Forbes could have invaded Young’s space a bit better on his final shot, even from 30 feet out....

Rudy Gay enjoyed his best night of the preseason, and maybe his best in a Spurs uniform, with 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Pau Gasol ended with 14 points and 10 assists, while White pumped in 15 points in his debut with the Spurs’ starters.

All of it was wasted in a storm of blown defensive assignments.

“Got a lot of work to do,” Popovich said. “But the competitiveness was great. The camaraderie was great. The defense left a little to be desired....”

To say the Spurs did not play very good defense would not be accurate, if you ask guard Patty Mills.

“We didn’t play defense at all,” he said.

Atlanta was the first team the Spurs faced this preseason that emphasized pushing the pace and ball movement. It was a different kind of test for a Spurs defense that had shown the makings of being a solid unit against Miami, Detroit and Houston.

“It probably exposed what we’ve been trying to work on this preseason, which is good,” Mills said. “It’s what we need.”

Forbes said the Spurs were experimenting with coverages they might not use when the games start to count. Many of those coverages might next end up on the cutting room floor. Though Murray was the undisputed defensive pace-setter of this Spurs squad, Mills scoffed at the notion his absence accounted for his team’s defensive troubles in Atlanta.

“It doesn’t take superpowers to get back in transition,” Mills said. “It’s more of an awareness thing. That was terrible....”

Instead, the Spurs fell to 2-2 and will move on to their preseason finale in Orlando on Friday. Popovich hopes the team’s defense might meet them there. He noted previous Spurs teams — even those that wound up historically good defensively — often began the season lagging on that end.

“Hopefully we’ll follow the same path and get better as we go,” Popovich said.
