2021 SPURS MEDIA DAY & TRAINING CAMP

The new season is almost upon us! Monday's Media Day and the start of Training Camp on Tuesday mark its commencement.

Many of the guys have been spending time together throughout the summer in between individual and group workouts. They've had some team workouts already ahead of the official start next week. Half our team is new so the more time they can spend building chemistry on and off the court the better.

Say what you will about him, but when we played the Bucks and the guys greeted him you could tell how much the camaraderie meant to him. You can tell how much it means to him to be back in SA and playing for the Spurs again.

How young are we? Bryn is the fourth oldest!

Comes across as poised and articulate especially considering he's 18 (!), and just like when he plays, has his own rhythm about him.

Often considered a salary-filler add in to the DD trade, Al-Farouq has a vet approach to his situation with us and is trying to make the most of it. I don't think he sticks around, but he has the right attitude and if he does end up playing some games for us, hopefully he stays healthy to contribute well.

In that interview he says he is a leader by example. WHAT?????? All he ever does is talk about what he is going to do. Then plays passively and lets others do the heavy lifting.

Someone who leads by example would be Derrick White. I never see him say anything stupid like "I'm going to run this team" or "the next few years I will lead this team".

Just please Dejounte, STFU and play. We are sick of hearing you talk....

Yeah I'm leaning towards that POV as well, with the caveats that I'm a different generation so maybe all social media rubbing me the wrong way is my bias, too. His sister passed away this summer so I'm trying not to be too critical, but honestly he's been like this before and since. He presents himself like he's 'the man' on the team (and when he plays like it he tends to get tunnel vision which is the opposite of what you want from a PG) when he was drafted to be a complementary player to whoever the #1 guy was.

The biggest eye roller for me was his getting the first vaccine shot quite late, like just before media day/training camp, and going on about how he's a LEADER for getting it. Leaders don't go around declaring their leadership, especially when the example they set is waiting till the last acceptable moment that wouldn't hurt the team. That was definitely a better to keep it to yourself moment. But even before then he's posted these cryptic posts and fans get all reactive reading too much into it.

I think he's an emotional guy with some serious past issues that he hasn't full dealt with. Lots of guys make 'This is gonna be the year!', 'Get ready!' type of posts; lots of players are active on social media. I think what we're reacting to is a certain level of discrepancy between declaration and delivery. Maybe he's a speak it into existence guy but it resonates differently with his generation of fans versus the older ones, I think. Lots of younger fans love him for these types of posts.

But it's interesting that Pop said recently that there are four or five guys who have emerged as leaders on the team keeping everyone to a high standard, keeping everyone accountable:

We'll see how the new faster style of play that makes for a more equitable O system will show that leadership. We can't have DJ as the #1 option. We can't have DJ getting into heated arguments with Pop on the sidelines (that DD stepped into to break up). Leadership is sharing the ball more and making others better, too.

In fairness, a lot of the younger guys have credited DJ with support and guidance behind the scenes, and that's a big credit to him. Hopefully that's what takes precedence more over time.
